I think I can safely say, that that's not correct. Yesterday I corrupted a blue Blacksmith's Strongbox with the +1 unique item mod, and the dropped unique was corrupted (and identified) as well. So it seems the corruption spreads to all items dropped. In fact, I can't remember seeing ANY non-corrupted item drop from a corrupted box since reading this thread.
Here's the corrupted unique that dropped, although you can't see it came from a blue box...
Yeah, I've noticed this too; I think the behavior might have changed since I started writing this and I just missed redoing that part (or I just fudged something up in my initial data gathering). I'll fix it ASAP.

Noticed this as well, figured the behavior has chanced since the original post. Make it a little more risky since if something good drops it still had a 1 in 4 chance of being scienced into a rare.
Since the return of Strongboxes to the game I have been trying this again. So far it just seems like a waste of currency. I think more than Cartographer's boxes may have been nerfed; I have mostly been trying Blacksmith's and Armorer's for my 2H Mace Groundslammer, but also Jeweler's and once Cartographer's.
Has anyone else been trying this lately with success? If so any pointers or suggested "rules of thumb" for how to roll Vaal worthy 1.2 Strongboxes would be greatly appreciated!

I call this a success worth 2 chaos orbs (each rare ring or amulet is 1/3 chaos recipe). There were also 2 pairs of belts vendored for 2 chance through "same rare name" recipe. I won't try to sell these, because I don't like selling cheap stuff.
I don't like corrupting cartographer's, but the rest of the guide looks up to date to me.
I don't have any meaningful sample size, but all that corrupted 6Ls on poe.xyz show that they still drop well.

Yeah, I should probably change that - corrupting cartos is probably only worth it now if you find then in a3 zones while grinding masters or Piety, especially since this is at the beginning of the league and corrupting a carto now could mean losing out on a significant part of your map pool.
Otherwise, my luck's been pretty shitty this league both in terms of getting vaal orbs and using them, so something may have changed. I wouldn't be able to say what without a lot more data, though.
