[GUIDE] Corrupting Boxes for Fun and Profit

i need something to be cleared up. do you always get your rares with 6 mods from a corrupted box? because in this thread there are only rares with 6 mods linked.

also i couldn't find any info on the wiki what a vaal orb actually does to a box. does it give all the rares automatically 6 mods, can it add a 7th or 8th mod to rare boxes like with maps or does it just corrupt some of the items?

if anyone knows for sure, this should be added to the wiki.

No; you can get a vaaled version of a normal rare depending on what the mods on the box are. This is something I'm actually looking into right now, and it's really, really hard to determine if/when an item in a box will become what I call a "vaal rare", and when it was already a rare that got a vaal affix/white socket. I'll explain this a bit more later in post.

Essentially, when you corrupt a box, it corrupts some or all of the items inside. There are currently some very odd interactions between corrupting a box and certain mods such as IDed and Mirrored that I'm gathering data on, but in general you can expect at least all the white items in a box to be corrupted. This can be any and all varieties of corrupting - you can have normal white items that had the corruption do nothing, white items with bizarre implicits, white items with white sockets (Unset Rings are my favorite here :P), and of course the "vaal rares," which are items which always have 6 mods and have an increased chance to 5 and 6-link. (I'm still looking into the 5-link thing, too, but I've got some rather compelling evidence that corrupting can give you a 5-link specifically.) With maps, it can make the map a multi-mod rare, bump it up to a rare of the next tier, or just do bugger-all.

I don't know what the wiki editing policies are, or even where this info would go; if I can get some help with that, I'd be happy to write in box behavior once I understand all the weird shit that goes on with certain mods.

As a sidenote, if a dev wants to poke their head in here and clarify how corruption works with the weirder box mods like IDed and mirrored, that'd be grand :D
aah, yes. i totally forgot about the corrupt into rare item possibility. somehow i assumed that could only happen to uniques, but it's quite logical that it can happen to whites/blues as well. also i didn't know corrupting has chances to only change the sockets/links. i always either got white sockets or a unique downgraded to rare with oftentimes completely rerolled sockets. nice to know, thanks a lot!

regarding the wiki: i suppose you would need to register with the wiki hosting site, gamepedia. even if you don't know all the things for sure (yet) you could add a link to this thread to the corruption page to give people a place to look for additional info.

although it would certainly be much appreciated, i don't think an official will pop in here to enlighten us about the inner workings of corrupting boxes. but hey, speak of the devil and in he walks... ;)

Corruption can do 1 of 4 things.

1. Nothing
2. White sockets (more than one sometimes)
3. Special Implicit mod
4. Reroll into a rare with a 1/36 chance to be a 6-link

now that's a nice and simple list. if only the wiki would be so precise. i find it hard to gather all that info from the text there, especially the part about the 6-link. there's no word about it to be found.

Well the 6-link numbers for it were recently discussed by GGG at one of the conventions. Not sure that it is an equal chance to do any one of those but it seems so by both observation and how they have discussed the 6-link chances.

Got a hilarious one tonight.

6 off-color, and even more off-stats!

lol, that's quite a strange item. i guess the socket colors from corruption don't care for the base item, so they all have the same chance to be rolled. or you might just have been massively "lucky". ;)

anyways, do you have a link where GGG states that chance of 1/36 to 6-link? reddit, a video or something? it's always nice to have sources.
So I have read this guide.
I encountered a jewelry stronbox in map.
It has a mod that items are identified (that's all there was, it was a simple blue one).
I corrupted.
And here we go:

3 rings dropped, all rare.
My original account Dushan is banned.
I miss my Kiwi and Demigod's Presence.

http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/861216

They explain in the forum that the total chance is 1/144 since there are 4 total possible mods and that the 1/36 chance is if that mod, turning it into a rare, is rolled.

If only that thing had a single red socket I'd grab an enlitenment gem and use it as my swap to level gems.
