posting facts here again:
Rods are reel, fishing is not. Currently there is no possibility in the game to make rods useful as the npc that drops a 'quest starter' for a quest in act 2 that gives you the fishing-gem as a reward is not (yet) implemented in the game.

Ok! I had my doubts of its use as well. It seemed that there was only inaccurate troll info when I googled on the subject.
Out of curiousity, do you know what a rod usually sells for? (in standard)
