Sorry, this is so long, but since the wiki doesn't cover the reel lore of the fishing rod, I'd thought I'd post it here.



Before the fishing rod existed, there was only one very awkward place to attach your fishing line. "Open fly" fishing was attempted, but this method had too many snags.


The denizens of Sarn abandoned this brief method for something more hip, and the "open air" fishing movement was born.



While popular at the local Vaal Discothèque, the new fishing style was only useful for ice fishing and soon died out.

A wiley Templar began the pants free fishing movement (see the Old Man and the Deep) and the Marauder came up with his own pants free "Bear" style of fishing.

The Duelist noticed his nubile audience had been growing less and less in the arena, and found his erstwhile fans admiring the fishing tournaments held on the beach.

Scribes note that the Duelist consulted with the Shadow (whose Dead Pool Theatre was losing followers as well). The Shadow is recorded as saying "We need bigger poles to compete with these Dirty Old Men and Naked Apes."

Thus, the first fishing poles were born.





The Vaal Science community was distraught as the fishing poles competed with the newly discovered "Enhance" vaal gem. Fishing in public was banned, but even as the newly termed anglers fled to private secluded fishing "holes", it wasn't enough to revive the public's interest in science.

Maligaro sought to outdo these rustic bamboo sprouting charlatans, and began concocting his own gem, extracting the key essences of Enlarge and Enrage. It would grant a pole of monstrous size and restore the spiny barbed end to the pole so that artificial hooks weren't needed.


He enlisted the help of Raulo, and injected the essence of the Enlarge gem. It worked, but it worked too well. The populace clamored to see the results of Maligaro's experiment, but Maligaro knew his career was doomed if he couldn't ameliorate the side effects.

Other Vaal Scientists theorized that Maligaro had injected too much fishtosterone and that a counter balancing gem was needed. One such scientist, Hedwig von Smol had discovered a Vaal gem he termed "Reduced Size". When he suggested it as a counterbalance, Maligaro flew into a fit of rage and thrashed Hedwig within an inch of his life.

In his play, Endless Night, the balladeer Vatsyayana, quoted Maligaro as calling it a "Baleful Gem".

in ursine helm a soothing nest

Maligaro:

This question is of paramount importance, as it is the biggest mystery of them all.

Why on earth would they implement a fishing rod, and introduce added necessary steps to find it (farming with a tricorne)?

Why do they have their own set of properties?

Why did they add a unique rod?

Who created them? Was it the same person as wrote the code? It could not be, because it has its own model, hence the artist must have been involved as well. Chris has the final say in everything, so he must have been involved as well.

I sense a deep conspiracy.

Just to give more insight for those that stumble upon this... I found a rod a few days ago.





Legend has it I was playing in a party with a friend messing around with new characters,
Than out of the corner of my eye I spot some blue stranger.
words in a sea of blue text and mangled monkey bodies,
My buddy missed it and continued to chase the monkeys.
We were but normal exiles that day over dressed for the killing party with our gold gears, Included were our triangle hats that drooped feathers over our right ears.

Anyways all fun aside. I found a blue rod RNG Act 2 riverways. We were both wearing Unique Tricones which was pure coincidence but that's all.

Hope this confirms/answers some more questions about finding rods. In my opinion, luck of the draw it was.

Didn't think it was the helm that did it...but it's worth 1c so couldn't hurt...
