PoE is not an MMORPG!

The number of threads recently about people "cheating" or "paying to win" is ridiculous - surely the game is in no way different from a single player game for the majority of us - akin to ARPG's of old (eg. D1, D2, Divinity etc). The only difference here is that the game requires an internet connection to play, which results in an obligatory social interaction and inherent "jealousy" and competitiveness. If more of us just regarded this game for what is what meant to be - a single player ARPG with an optional multiplayer/PVP component - none of these complaints re. "cheating" like botting/boxing/Ebaying/d2jsp would matter. The number of threads recently which seem to equate this game to WoW or the like is unreal...this is NOT an MMORPG in essence! Enjoy it for what it is - a single player game with an optional social aspect!
Persistent, this one.
Why not just edit the original title.

Why did I come here today?

As I said, nice sentiments and I can't say I disagree.

But I think a lot of people will, so I'll keep an eye on this for civility and the usual.
If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period.
Didn't know I could edit the title - sorry!
But he is right, any one trying to argue this is in any way MMO is just delusional.

but i do love the game, and enjoy it.

I would agree except that GGG has stuck some MMO features (primitively done at this time) into PoE.

This issue is the one driving a huge amount of controversy on these boards as you've noted. Some of us see the potential for GGG to define a new genre, a true ARPG-MMO crossover game, and would welcome it. Others would much prefer it stay as is or even regress into more of a pure ARPG with the online component being mainly for races. Some even advocate taking the online component out and going to a standalone game.

We can all argue back and forth until we are blue in the face, but it is GGG that needs to clarify their vision of where they intend to go.
He kinda hit a home run with this one, all the flame/rage threads come from a silly confusion that this is an MMORPG rather than an ARPG with nice online features. :) Hope the point gets across so nobody will get mad anymore. Peace

I agree with you about the single player part - there it doesn't matter (and 95% are going to play it like d2 a single or party PVE game).

But because of races PoE is not just a single player PoE game - seems like GGG wants to make it competitive. And then cheating really matters and makes the threads ok.
I couldn't even care less if people p2w in wow. Heck, it would give me a reason to start playing the game again.

I don't believe a non-p2w game can ever provide the incentive and dedication that a p2w game can.

To say a p2w game can't work is just pure ignorance. My very first gaming experience was in magic the gathering, a card game; and mtg is pure pay to win. And it has/had a HUGE following.

Really, it's simple. A p2w game done right (like D3 will be eventually) has a HUGE available market, primarily people who are drawn to gambling. Don't like it? Then don't play it.
