The drop timer really needs to be longer.

When you are in a public party and a ranged char with the drop far away and someone cock blocks you with a totem or something it really sucks.

5 seconds would be a hell of alot better.

Right now it is just who can cockblock the most in public parties.

Dont say "do not play in public parties then"

That is not adressing the issue.

The whole point of the timer is to stop people from being jackasses but it is too short.

Infact I am pretty sure the people against a longer timer or item locking are the ones who try to ninja.

MY SUGGESTION is as follows.

Let the group leader choose the timer, be it no timer or 5 seconds or 10 or whatever.
Let players see this easily.

Do not like the timer? Leave the group.

Simple and effective!

Won't happen.. GGG said that they tested longer timers and ppl standing waiting for timers after every fight is not a good game play model.

Believe it or not that aspect of the game HAS been tested.. it is tweaked to where they want it now.

Dont expect to see it change nor should it

Then I suggest they do away with the timer altofhter and just have D3 style drops.
People really need to get rid of this "that item is mine" mentality. If you play in public parties ALL of the items are open for everyone. The timer is a small, randomly assigned bonus to give you a chance. The timer is not given to items that your character needs based on its class. It's random. If you miss the item, you lost your bonus chance and it's free for anyone. This is not hard to understand.

All GGG has to do is go FFA for loot. Once a drop has a players name associated with it he/she will think it's theirs. So go FFA or no timers - don't care which way they go.
This game needs a god damn declaration of the fact that the loot timers do not relate to ownership but rather a aspect of the game to try to help ranged players get items more frequently. If you miss the item with the timer it is not a huge deal, the loot was never yours.

You didn't get block from your loot you got beat to the group loot.

Simple as that.

If you can't get in quick enough to loot as ranged reconsider your build.
The game does not adapt to you, you adapt to it.

Its a good thing the devs don't think like you. Very few people like the in a bubble style drops.
