How can I stop being an Altoholic?

I want to make a character and stick to it. I want to do 78 maps with that character. I want to farm enough with that character to buy a 6link or endgame gear to perfect it. But whatever build I do, just when I get close to high end mapping, I get bored of it or immediately fall in love with a new build that I see. Here's a summary of how I play this game:

1. Make a nice build that has a potential to do well in endgame

2. Spend everything I have on getting good gear when I get to level 65-70. Not godly but not bad.

3. Start mapping or piety farming.

4. See that the build is not like in my dreams because gear or boredom.

5. See a nice build on forums and think "Oh man! That's the ultimate build for me. I will do everything I want to do with this build."

6. Try to sell everything on my first char to afford not-bad gear for my new dream (believing that somewhere along the way I will magically find all the exalts I need for endgame gear).

7. Go to 1.

Help.

Don't. The game isn't going to change for you. Play the game true to how you enjoy it, and quit listening to others tell you what you're doing wrong.
I agree with the templar above, don't force yourself to play a way you don't enjoy.

But to tell you the truth, i've been through that a lot and I ended up discovering that my characters usually get much much stronger after lvl 70, because I plan builds for 100+ points. Also because I get better gear along the way.

The rule of thumb for me is usually : between lvl 65 and 80, my characters triple/quadruple DPS and gain a lot of survivability. You feel like shit at 65 and like a god at 80. So now I try to stick to my characters and refine the gear and the build after lvl 70, and it makes a huge difference, the only one that matters really.

Also, I do my own builds and it's so much more satisfying when you pull it off.

pick a good build instead of a tarded bild?

I'm playin a bild rite now which is super awesome, i hit a button, i spin, then i proceed to win. the other best bilds i've found are Arly's and Findel's bow bilds, split arrow or lightning arrow, and kaiserin's wanderer bild.. i've not tried out the CoCs bilds but they look gud 2.

so dont play a dumb bild like facebreaker or somethin, u gonna get bored quik.

someone needs to make a top 5 post 1.10 bild list, cuz so many tard bilds trap ppl, like OP, cuz there's no way to tell whats good and whats tarded cuz its just a buncha fanboys who never criticize the bild, n if some1 does he usually just a troll.

For instance i played a fire trap bild that was good but i mean once u hit 75.. its total crap imho, but u waste 2weeks getting there. I didnt wanna post it in the thread, cuz so many ppl take criticism of their bild SOOOO personally.

Also, its like u sed, u spend 5-10 ex to get a 'starter' set to try out the bild, and u find out its weak, and to get a huge upgrade would cost 100+ex.. and u got no guarantee that would fix the problem, anyway.

being an altaholic,is what i am also.
But i found out that the builds i make shine near 75, so my plans as the above poster is about 95-100 points.

I know also the xp curve is going apeshit after 85 or so,so i keep it classy till then.

Stoping just before maps feels and is wrong mentality, since at least the xp pace is great till 70 lvl
Bye bye desync!
I play the game differently than most. I play HC/solo/self-found/bind on equip. I play seven characters up through the game, until recently keeping all 7 within 5 levels of each other. The game design made me break that last rule, as six of my characters are hung up behind a wall (cruel Dom), and the seventh doesn't find a challenge until the end of act III merc and maps. Breaking that rule really hurt, but there was absolutely no way to progress without it.

Don't quit playing the way you like unless it becomes apparent that the game is forcing you to do otherwise.
To be honest, it's probably not a bad thing that you're exploring different builds and options.

Most people just google something random and follow it to the T.

In the long run, I think you'll be happier with the acquired knowledge that comes with your process.

Few questions - Do you enjoy how you have been playing? Do you like playing new characters you roll? OR Does it stress you out that you can't stick with one build and you continually re-roll? If you personally are unhappy with how you play then change it up but if you are unhappy with it because someone is telling you that you are playing wrong - don't listen. Play to have fun.

If you enjoy the fun of making them then make one change to how you re-roll. Farm to get the currency you need to buy the gear or actually farm the gear yourself so it doesn't cost you currency and don't sell your gear from the character you just leveled. Keep them so that you can bounce around when you get bored with the current one you are working on and maybe if you have several to bounce between it won't be so boring. You aren't locked into one character permanently.

I've been playing almost 2 years now and have never stepped foot in a map. I enjoy re-rolling new characters but don't base them on anything I've seen on the forums. I re-roll to builds in my head. I will probably see maps on this current character because my best friend started playing with me after months of badgering but I think I've infected him with altoholic as well. I've always played solo the entire 2 years until now. Having a partner is kind of fun.

Play how you like and don't think it's wrong. If you're having fun, that's all that matters.

I'm the same bro, except the process starts earlier for me

1. craft own build
2. level until about 50-60 on self found gear
3. re-roll a different build

I have yet to break the 60 mark since CB.
