Please change the no tolerance stance on trading in global chat until trade chat is made less awful.

(started writing this thread last night but had to AFK. Found it still open today and finished it up)

I was trying to sell off some stuff today. I decided to do so on the global channel because the trade channel sucks (more on that later). I sent a few messages, with significant delay between them (2-3min each within a channel?) and never tried to sell the same pack of items more than once in the same channel. I switched channels, and on my first message someone made it very clear he wanted to report me. I essentially said, "Hey man, I'm not here to bother anyone. If you don't like it, it won't be done here." This did not stop him, and I was soon asked (politely) by staff not to trade in global. So here I am.

This is not really a bitch thread. Staff (Dan I think it was?) asked me politely not to do something and I didn't reply. That's all. No mute, no "OMG FUCK YOU". This is a thread I've actually wanted to make for a while and this event sort of reminded me to do so. Anyway as the title says, I think the policy is bad, and I hope to explain why as well as offer my own solution.

So first of all, the reason I was trading on the global channel in the first place is because things sell there, and certain things sell MUCH quicker on global channels than they do in trade chat. There is a large segment of the population who does not go to the trade channel (because it is spammy and nearly impossible to keep up with). Those people, however, are still perfectly willing to buy things (as evidenced by the fact that these things which do not sell on trade chat without sitting around for 7 hours can often be sold in seconds on global).

That said, taking an absolutely zero tolerance policy is not the right way to go about moderating global, at least not until trade channel is made more bearable (ideas for which I will post below). I understand that spam is bad. I hate spam just as much as the next person. However, a few messages now and again that aren't in an annoying format (ALL CAPS WITH EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!) are not spam. Global is not going to turn into trade chat 2.0 if there's a few messages every once and again. Conversations will still be had, and nothing will be lost in a sea of spam. If a PLAYER feels that a zero tolerance policy on trading in global is appropriate (which in my experience, very few think so enough to be vocal about it), then they can simply ignore the person trading (or report them if there is actual spamming going on).

Now, for my opinion on the steps required to fix things...
1: Remove the no trading in global rule. This could be permanent, but it could also be temporary until trade chat is fixed.
2: Implement some sort of loose rule for trading in global (example: You should never have two trade posts onscreen at once when your chat is opened).
3: Implement a flood timer FOR TRADE CHAT ONLY. A flood timer in global, where people are trying to converse, is a bad thing. Please do not do that. For trade channel, 10 seconds is likely appropriate.
4: Lower the number of items you can post in trade chat. It's currently at 10. I suggest halving it to 5. If everyone links 10 items in a single post on trade chat, you can see THREE posts onscreen at a time. This essentially means that every new post pushes the chat up by 1/3rd of a screen. This is a large factor in the spamminess of trade chat. Combine that with the 10 second flood timer and you end up with a much more legible trade chat.

Admittedly, I haven't had either chat on in quite some time, there should never be trading allowed in global.

I do agree that 10 seems much. Should make it like 3, and prevent that poster from linking again for like 10 second. This includes other trade channels as well

What gives you more rights than any other player to use he global chat as a trade chat ? nothing
And if everyone was doing that with a few messages like you suggest ( because suggesting that one can use it for a few messages without spamming / CAPSLOCKING / etc ... is basically that ), what would it become ?
Unreadable.

So no, hell no, no trading alone in the general chat, thx.

There is already a flood timer for the chat AFAIK, that got put there because of the trade chat.
Now, the trade chat is a mess, a new trading system is in progress by GGG but noone here knows when it could show up, and until then : use poe.xyz.is
SSF is not and will never be a standard for balance, it is not for people entitled to getting more without trading.
I agree with you on 1 thing: Nerf the amount of items that can be linked. 3-5 is plenty fine.

There should never, ever, ever, ever be any trade in Global Chat, tyvm. It sucks enough when someone does the famous "PC *insert random lvl 24 weapon here*", gets a polite answer and thus encourages another 10 people to do the same thing.

Trade in Global? fuck no.

EXILES EVERYWHERE, PLEASE?!?!?!
If trade is to be allowed in global, there won't be global chat, just another trade room.

It looks like we need an ingame auction house :)
If everyone were granted the same preferential treatment you seem to be wanting, then global chat would "suck" just as much as trade chat, for exactly the same reasons. You want a place where you can advertise without competition from everyone else doing the same, so you broke the rules.
Trade in trade channels and/or use the trade section in the forum. Those are your 2 options. Don't like those options? Don't trade.

Hum, that would work if there were 10 or less people using Global, but if these changes were implemented then virtually everyone would switch over to Global and well, 1,000 (Most likely way more) people each posting as soon as their previous messages naturally scrolls out of view = super duper rapid constant spam.

You've already got 100's of trade chats and various forums. You've already got choice in how you handle things. Previously you had no choice and had to live with whatever in-game channel the game automatically chose.

Trade works OK in global as part of a discussion. Player A says ' man I have been trying to get X item for forever.'

Played B says " Oh, I have one of those, I could probably let it go cheap."

Player A -> Sends PM.

That works fine, but people sometimes still get pissy about it.

Spamming your items for SALE in global is unacceptable.
Anarchy/Onslaught T shirt
Domination/Nemesis T shirt
Tempest/War Bands T shirt
anyone notice that items spammed in trade are usually mostly crap or otherwise too godly to be affordable? :D
