Vaal orbs have a good chance of 5/6 linking your items

at the same time they can also destroy your items... there's no way in hell i would use them on my most valuable stuff.

That seems to be the idea. For a typical player vaal orbs are the easiest way to get huge upgrades by a mile(easier 6 linking, can easily corrupt cheap uniques like aurseize/stone of lazhwar for a big bonus).

For rich players they can go for more BiS rolls such as additional arrow on a 6 linked quillrain.

Exactly... in Ambush I used this strategy... I alched a decent 5 socket 4 link armor, and it was okay, then I threw a vaal orb on it and it turned into a 6 socket 5 link with rerolled stats... the stats weren't that great, but being a decent base type and 20% quality, and being a 5 link, it still improved quality of life for my level 60ish character a lot

Vaal orbs are best for semi-selffound players, or players that are rich enough to throw lots and lots of awesome items at vaal orbs to try get a slight benefit.

I think they are awesome :D

I'll keep that in mind next time I want to 6l my item.
Cool, does the starting sockets/links matter?
Went D1 -> D2 -> D3 -> PoE. Natural progression...

Great chance compared to fusing.

But in turn you have to use chromatics before your ONE chance to get 5/6L from a Vaal orb, and if it fails (which is far more likely than that it will succeed), the item can be thrown away. I think the quoted bit is dangerously misleading, especially for casual or "poor" players, even though technically possibly correct.

If using fuses is like roulette with incredibly bad odds, using Vaal orbs to 6L your stuff is like Russian Roulette with above average odds.

Thanks, I'll pass! It's hard enough to get a 6S base item with the right socket colors.
What I don't understand is why people insist on gambling with uniques. I'm pretty sure the effects are the same on a plain white item. So why not just (vaal orb) chance a white chest and see if it comes up with 6L and decent stats? I got a decent rare amulet with 6 mods from a white amulet.

Vaal orbs are awesome, i've gotten gg items when I used them on high level rares with bad mods with great results. Too bad its in standard now.

Chancing an item won't affect the number of sockets and links, though, and it won't add mods that are otherwise not obtainable (particularly not on a unique that doesn't have them). I can see why people do it, but it's very risky.

You misunderstood and my wording was bad. "chancing" = "vaal orb chancing"

um... you do know that fusing have been known to 6l in 8000 right? that isnt that reliable.
and it doesnt instill confidence since you get exactly one chance .
does it matter if say the armor isn't 5S-6S to start?
