The option to upgrade your gear with Vaal orb is an amazing idea. Who Are We? Where do we come from?

About the Vaal Orb on gems, will it lock them xp wise and quality wise? Can you use a Vaal Orb on a lvl1 gem (if you're, say, trying to get +1 levels on it), get a +1 level, then level it up normally? Similarly, can you get +1-3 quality from the corruption, then quality it up as normal?
