Character name already exist.

Thankfully I don't have this problem, since I use character names from a story a friend is writing - (or will continue writing when she gets a new computer) - called Master Swordswoman. (Warning: the story is for adults only (so no linky)).
Aside from/in addition to/before that, I usually use/d names from The Last Legionary series of books by Douglas Hill. (Not ran into many problems with them either). But since my friends story has more names in it, (she sent me a copy of the character list), it is more useful for this game because the amount of characters you can (currently?) have. So, my advice for anyone playing computer games of this type is to find some more obscure names to use, then you'll have unique names and won't have to worry about problems like this in the first place. |

I personally just create characters with unique names. Many of my characters have a first + last name, and the ones that don't use aliases that I have made myself. If I'm going for the first + last name format I'll usually look up things relating to aspects of their character: references to old literature, obscure words involving their class, important locations, historical events, et cetera. For aliases I create a short, simple name from syllables that fits into my vision of their character and background.
The reason for not letting multiple people have the same name is because it would become confusing. How can you tell which "Steve" in chat is which? What happens if you add "Steve" to your friends list? They could use account names in addition to the character names to help players identify which is which, but this seems extremely ugly in chats and generally just a waste of space in most cases. It'd also still be confusing if you don't constantly look at the account names to understand who is who. I can see reasons for keeping it either way and don't particularly mind it being either way.

Some entitled baby got mad at me for having a name he wants to use, how pathetic can you get?
Get some imagination, not that hard.

There's that overused word again.

So you want this to be like Starcraft 2 where everyone is named John? I like games with unique character names, why do you think SC2 is so lame? (No offence SC2 players, I know some of you like PoE too, but non-unique names is a stupid idea)
Non unique names is just like the bullshit blizzard pulled where posting on the forums required your real name to be associated with the posts that everyone complained about. |

Well when you have as many customers as Blizzard have unique names becomes a difficulty.

Picking an original name helps. Not sure I've found anyone else that uses my character name in any game and I've been using it since 97.
