Why is the inventory so horribly small?
Inventory management is part of the game. Just another hurdle to overcome on your way to smashing more mobs.

I was concerned about the tiny inventory size too, but once you break yourself free of the need to drag every item back to town (as much as the packrat/collector in me wants to do this), the lack of space becomes much more manageable. Most of the lower level items are only going to net identify fragments anyway, so carrying them back to town is a waste of time.
At this point, I'm only carrying back high-quality superiors (15%+), 3L RGB socketed items (for chromatics), rings/amulets, and blues/yellows. I'm getting to the point where I'm starting to be picky about even blue stuff - so much of it drops that I still find myself running back to town every 5 minutes if I try to pick it all up. (One thing I do find slightly annoying is the layout of the inventory - specifically, the fact that it's 5 spaces high. There are too many items that take up 1x4 and 2x4 spaces in your inventory, and so it's common to end up with as much as 20% of your inventory space empty because you have no Nx1 sized items to fill it up.) " ...and for me, this is what makes the game so very, very hard. XD But yeah- it's all about prioritising what you pick up, and resisting the urge to vendor every last thing you see lying on the ground. I'm not a n00b- I'm a Online Game Floor Examination Expert.

Op needs to play a game with a party ; when playing at the pace of others he'll soon realise discriminating what you pickup is key to playing the game efficiently and as it was intended.
I wouldn't even bother collecting +qual weapons or armour, as Whetstones and armourers become much less valuable the higher up you get (as you're changing gear much less frequently). Make Elite IV:Dangerous happen!

Yeah i would prefer it if the inventory was 33% larger.

Just hum the Tetris theme whenever you're playing with the inventory. It helps.
And when you fill a line your gear doesn't disappear, so that's good too. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.
I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period. |

A developer the other day in game said along the lines "We wanted the inventory and each item to feel substantial. We want it feel real and when you pick up an item you the player have to ask if it's really worth carrying. It is part of the game and it is intended to be part of the game."

I use my weapon swap (Default X) to equip extra weapons or shields I find just to save inventory space since i don't need to weapon swap for combat.
