Ask a (formerly) homeless (pseudo-)bum anything

Have you signed up for every single government assistance program for which you are eligible?

Spoiler
I work for state government. From 2010 - 2012 I worked for the Cabinet for Health and Family Services doing benefit determination for SNAP (aka Food Stamps) and Medicaid.

As a U.S. military veteran I can only hope that Uncle Sam is doing right by your service in the health coverage area. At the very minimum I expect you have VA coverage, and (depending on Texas' participation) you may also be eligible for expanded Medicaid under "Obamacare".

While I am sure there are some state policy/procedure differences between Texas and my home state, I am certain that you could apply for, and obtain, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP/Food Stamps) support. If you have not applied, or have run into issues with your application and want some "insider" assistance, please feel free to PM me with your questions/concerns and I will provide what information I can. For all of the historic issues with fraud and abuse that exist, the food benefit program (when properly applied/used) is a good example of government program working well.

Depending on your military discharge status, you may be eligible for veteran support programs, another avenue to explore if you have not already (although I imagine you have).

Lastly, and most importantly, thank you for your service to the country. I may not agree with where our country sends you, or what they ask/tell you to do, but words cannot adequately express the level of appreciation I have for the men and women that make the choice to serve in that manner.

Also as someone who's job is about to suddenly no longer exist, are there special facilities for Families?
Yes, I do.

If you're only just about to lose your job, there's still a lot of stuff you can do before getting desperate. Unemployment, as an obvious example. There tend to be a lot less shelters for families, but a lot more programs to provide direct financial/food/medical assistance.

I'd certainly like to think so. I worry sometimes I've missed some obscure one for which I'm eligible.

As all my experiences with homeless bums comes from watching TV and movies, I get the impression that being homeless makes you a potential victim.

The Fisher King whilst being a great movie, portrayed Robin Williams character being set on fire just for kicks.

American Pyscho depicted the homeless man being thrill killed, it may have happened in Patrick Bateman's mind but it was very confronting to see it on screen.

Then there was the case not so long ago of a bath salt's fueled face eating encounter.

Are these stories based on actual events (face eating was very real) or are they sexed up for the viewer. And do you feel safe? Well as safe as anyone in USA can feel leaving the relative safety of their homes.

I bet on some erratic behavior as usual. Dear homeless bum, do tell us at least in vague terms what caused the absence of our flagship madman.

Aw yeah, I knew a bum who was stabbed for no reason at all, he enjoyed his weeks at the hospital, but it was fucked up. He was just walking by the tracks one night and this group of guys went past and one turned around and just shanked him. He didn't do anything to provoke it, and I knew him well enough to know he was just minding his own business. Some people forget the basic human principle that the strong should always protect the weak.
When I was a young teen a few and a few more years ago, after a night out on the tiles, much alcohol consumed, I later found out that one of my group had attacked a homeless person for no other reason than, I guess, they could. It certainly lowered my estimation of his character from there-on in.

Some in our group even became homeless at a later date (not him though), but you have no idea what to offer these people as, at that age, the property is not yours to offer and, in most cases, the reason for their homelessness is something you wouldn't want in your house anyway, no matter how much of a friend you were. In other cases, people still carry so much pride that they would rather beg pennies of strangers than beg to put upon a friend. They don't want their friends to see them like that, it's more embarrassing to be housed in shame than homeless and independent.

Conversely, a few years later, I was walking round town on my own in broad daylight, just walking from shopping centre A to shopping centre B, when a bum decided to ask me for free stuff, either cigarettes or cash, can't remember which. I gave him a pound coin. My thanks was to be grappled to the ground, for no other reason than, I guess, because he was drunk and he could. It certainly lowered my estimation of the homeless from there-on in.

But there but for the grace of God go I. I have no doubt that life could deal me the homeless card at some point. What of my estimations then? Would I be victim or thug? Like most rational people, I bury my head in the sand and try not to think about it.

From a deeply philosophical point of view, we should be homeless in a perfect society because our love of housing is what creates the selfish over-consumption earth destroying version of humanity, but heh-ho, we do what we do.

I used to live in Detroit. Compared to there, everywhere feels safe. Even Afghanistan. Homelessness has nothing to do with it; a guy walking down the street is a guy walking down the street.

Let me to be slightly more specific; I believe I know, which is slightly different from knowing I know. In any case, name and shame policy prevents me from revealing.

I don't regret it one bit. I actually consider the time in Afghanistan to be the happiest year of my life... which does make me wonder if I'm a little crazy. And I consider the Army to be the best job I've ever had, nothing else even close.

I miss playing PoE quite a bit, but it's kind of a good thing. I used to play it too much, not getting enough things done that I needed to get done for real-life purposes. The break is a good thing. I am, however, starting to run out of real-life things to do (post-9/11 GI Bill is mostly set up by now) so I'm getting closer and closer to a point where I legitimately have large quantities of free time with nothing productive to do. Which is why I'm starting to miss PoE again.

Oh well. Probably only be homeless another week or two. Already starting to look for my own place.
