Yeah not really. That is hyperbole on a stupid level.

To OP, I'm not sure about the definitions of "hardcore/casual" you give, but generally speaking I very much feel the same way about PoE and I like your post.

As far as "hardcore gamer", you can't define that phrase within the purview of one game, namely PoE in this case. A hardcore gamer is somebody who truly loves playing games, and that's the bottom line. Im a hardcore music fan, and guitarist, and gamer. I love these things very much, among many other things. For many years a little piece of wood with metal trucks and wheels was the most important thing in my life, so games aren't much weirder. Or a little white ball with red stitches, which is even worse.

If you told me I couldn't play a video game ever again, I'd be fucking devastated. Just as I would be devastated if you took away anything else that held meaning to me in life. I love video games, and I think that is what it means to be a "hardcore" gamer.

Now, when it comes to defining a hardcore game, that is different.

I agree with your definitions, nicely summarized for people that had their doubts about them.

Now I will list few facts that may prove to be interesting debate points;

FIRST game can be appealing to casual and to more hardcore gamers alike, it's the so called "holy grail" of game design, alas very few games can say that they achieve this "holy synergy" but much more have failed/burned down in attempt to do so.

SECOND Making game more appealing to casual gamers does not necessarily means more money for developer, although people often perceive so - Internet is big place and niche gaming is growing market. If you make the good game for 10% of populace they will be ready to play it extensively for ages funding it in process too. Casual gamers are shifty bunch. They are not dedicated and leave game much more easily.

I seem to remember reading a definition along these lines:

They're all casuals
I'm hardcore
You're a no-lifer

They're all noobs and bads
I'm skilled and knowledgable
You're a nerd and take this game way too seriously

*sigh* It is because of shallow definitions such as these that we have so many people unhappy playing game nowadays. These definitions only aim to antagonize and create hierarchy or, lack of a better word, elitist, egoistic attitudes.

That aside, it is almost poetic!! LOL

Nope. No.
Perhaps, maybe little different, on occasions.
"Utterly"? no f. way.

A gamer could only call themselves 'Hardcore' if they play games that test their skills and reflexes to the limit. RNG have no place in hardcore.
