Diablo 3. A look back at the old trailer.....

What could have been was all in our imaginations. That trailer didn't really show what would be long lasting fun with the game. We were hyped because of what we wanted from looking at that trailer.

a. That's a finishing move. Johnny Cage can't uppercut someone's spine out of their body until the lifebar's gone.

b. Guilty Gear has these I believe. And the act 2 boss's flaming hammer attack feels like it at times.

Boss fights past cruelty in closed beta are why I don't play hardcore. Not so much because they are too hard but because I get huge lag spikes with most of them. Vaal Oversoul fights are half about fighting lag for me. I have watched streams of players dancing circles around Vaal. That never works for me. I have done it to Brutus and Merveil both with much success, but my fights with Vaal are always quirky with video problems. I never see the flame hammer coming. It just kills me and then sometimes I get the graphic a split second later and sometimes I don't see what got me at all.

And they did their very best to stoke that imagination. Those finishing moves at the end? They were never intended to be in. They were scripted and executed by a guy not seen in the trailer when they were 'supposed to happen'.

I agree: that trailer shows not what could have been. It never could have. That trailer shows how expertly Blizzard played their player base.

On the other hand: Maybe it's time to finally bury the hatchet and let D3 rest in peace. There's something much better and more deserving of our attention.

I watched this so many times.

To this day I think it looks better as a gameplay trailer than anything PoE has put out.

It's so sad to think of all the things that went wrong from there.
If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period.
14:31

So this is the old 2008 gameplay trailer for Diablo 3. I watched it today and I felt the old hype and hope that I had for the game. I couldn't wait to play it back then. I wish that the game that I saw in this trailer was made more in the vein of D2. It would have been absolutely awesome.

Maybe mega popular games are no longer destined to be great like Path of Exile. Maybe you have to have a small team to put in the effort to make something great. I don't know. All I know is that game looked like so much fun. I still like the graphics, I always did. They could have been a little darker and the overall theme could have been a lot more mature. That was the big problem with the current D3. The bosses looked and acted like they were from a power ranger cartoon.

Anyone else who dislikes D3 still feel really good about the game in this trailer?

I have the same opinion on this topic as you... .
CASUAL GAMER
I agree with that one poster who said

"This just shows how blizzard used and abused it's player base"

It almost seems like Blizzard had a fully functional game back in 2008, with good ideas, and it really seems like someone said..

"WoW is our money source. This game could mess with that. We must make this game where people want to play for a month, then go back to wow. DUMB IT DOWN! DELAY IT AS LONG AS YOU CAN! We must milk WoW for every penny that we can!"

then later on they said "I wonder what we could do with a RMAH?!?! Maybe we can use Diablo 3 to test this!?!"

Ever since then, every single decision and work done to diablo 3 has been about what will make people most wanting to pay for stuff from the AH?

Blizzard basically acted like car salesmen. Said any lie or fib they could in order to get people to come down to their car lot. Then once they at the car lot they PRETEND to be caring and wanting to make you happy. Then once they have your money, and your car breaks down a week later they laugh at you behind your back.

They removed the ladder.. symbolic of the ladder system removed from D2?
Boss finishing moves unimplemented for release.
Elemental effects removed!?
... :(

It's a good video, but looking back on it just reminds me of good things that were removed and a massive void of things that should have been there that never will be.

I still don't understand how such a large studio can fail like that. More money than brains, perhaps. Or just too much time granted them so they could overthink everything. Strange that they so totally ignored/disregarded the massive amounts of community feedback throughout the process too.
