This is what Chris said when i asked him about this awhile ago in a PM. hopefully he don't mind me quoting him on it :)

And to the people who say they are against it being on steam, why do you care? I personally love having ALL my games on steam, i rarely buy a game if it isnt on steam, and there are alot more people who feel the same way as me. Steam also has a VERY big userbase, normally around 3-5 million people online at any given time, so will bring alot more players to path of exile that would never know about it otherwise (yes many people never bother looking for games outside steam)

As long as Steam is not required, I'm fine with it. However, Steam is harsh DRM, and I don't particularly enjoy using it for everything.

Ofcourse it will be optional, i doubt GGG is gonna force steam on people. Though Path of Exile allrdy has harsh DRM kinda with always having to be online, wich is basicly the same DRM steam uses :) (steam even has an offline mode that poe dosent!)
If I remember correctly I believe chris said awhile back that they would love to be on steam but there was some issues or concerns or something preventing it from happening atm. Don't quote me on that though

why steam is a great because it can trade game, item and perfect deal game
in a future i wish to play path of exile in steam and talk in chat steam with my friend and trade item in a inventory steam
oh it a perfect community
please add path of exile to steam...
steam and path of exile are perfect
go to greenlight and wait for time to add in steam game dont worry because people select path of exile for sure
and game in greenlight is a top seller

You can add PoE to steam and use the chat system. I forgot which settings but it'll say "add non steam game". That's how I use the chat if I'm playing this.
Steam would be a great platform to release PoE for. People seriously think over 10k people will come to open beta when at maximum we had around 5-6k people online on open weekends?
if you don't use steam---------->use it (trade game and item ,chat ,community ,deal, wallet, workshop, greenlight, market and big picture)
because it a great platform
and i will very happy if path of exile go to steam and make people know that path is a great game

I've seen this game around for awhile now, but somehow forgot about it maybe just got too busy with other stuff. I searched the forums about a steam release as most of my games too are bought from there 800 plus. Well reading this post gives me some hope about being released on steam, as per quote by chris. I will now play beta and enjoy what the game has to offer, and pass along my 2 extra keys to steam friends who love rpg's. Chris i hope you can quickly find a way to make it happen on steam.

Good Luck!!!!
I would like to see this game on Steam as well. Aside from the trading benefits, it would benefit more on Steam's social and communication platform that would be integrated to PoE. That would be very good, imho and more people would see the game, get hooked and donate/support the devs :D

Steam isn't that bad too as there's already a Linux client and I'm sure GGG doesn't have any issues with people who'll tryto make this game work in Linux via Wine :)

Speaking of supporting GGG, I would like to at this very moment but I don't have a CC, and my debit doesn't have a Visa/Mastercard so I'll probably get one of those e-wallet that have one, attach it to Paypal and support this game. It's really excellent, thanks guys.
Edit: Effing hell, I hate it when people bump old topics :P

As long as Steam is not required to play I wouldn't care.

I hate steam.
May the RNG be with you always.
Steam would never be required for play if the game went to Steam.

If you want to see how other f2p games end up on Steam (and work pretty well), check out DFO. You start the game, you auth through the original company (and buy MTX through the original company). All that Steam provides is handing out the client binaries and bringing in new faces.
