I was wondering this as well, I think it would open the game up to more access.
Steam is simply too popular, the amount of people flooding in with OB is already incredible and way more than GGG originally estimated.
A release on Steam/Greenlight would attract even more players and at the moment this game just lacks the server capacity to do that.
also steam has a bad history of screwups and some pretty lame policies for submission
I don't know, but independence seems very important to GGG and so I can understand not going to Steam. While Steam does promote indie games and about everything, Valve is also trying to monopolize game publishing with the Steam platform (just my opinion). Don't get me wrong - Steam is a great platform for games of all kinds, but still - alot in one place...
This question has been asked frequently and can be found via a quick forum search.

POE is not on Steam because

1) Valve takes money
2) Too much traffic; as it stands GGG is struggling to estimate and be prepared for the relatively small influx of players into the game

In a year I could see it happening, if POE's growth is slower than expected, but slow growth is good for GGG. Slow linear growth of playerbase is controllable and ensures everyone has a good experience (in terms of lag) and means GGG can slowly ramp up its development costs (and pay off its debts).

I would rather GGG didn't spend 30% of their profits just to be on steam.
"PoE will come to Steam once we get time to integrate it - probably not soon, there are bigger things to handle in the near future." -Chris

This is what Chris said when i asked him about this awhile ago in a PM. hopefully he don't mind me quoting him on it :) So prolly wont happend for awhile yet, maybe a few months down the road after things are stable after OB, or they might wait until its 1.0 release ready.

And to the people who say they are against it being on steam, why do you care? I personally love having ALL my games on steam, i rarely buy a game if it isnt on steam, and there are alot more people who feel the same way as me. Steam also has a VERY big userbase, normally around 3-5 million people online at any given time, so will bring alot more players to path of exile that would never know about it otherwise (yes many people never bother looking for games outside steam)

As long as Steam is not required, I'm fine with it. However, Steam is harsh DRM, and I don't particularly enjoy using it for everything.
