Freeing inactive usernames?
Will GGG ever delete level 1 chars on accounts which have been inactive for a long time to free their names?

Hello, my name is Jim, and I am a Handle Hoarder.
Yes, I have names reserved that I like, and may one day like to play. I wouldn't be too happy if the names I hand picked are deleted just because I didn't play them. I wouldn't mind names getting deleted from inactive ACCOUNTS, but on singular characters, that would be pretty harsh. In addition, it's a nice hidden perk for all of us in CB to have the names we want. Doesn't seem fair for those names to get deleted just because we didn't get around to using them in a certain amount of time. Lastly, names could be viewed as some sort of currency if someone reeeeallllly wanted a character name someone else happened to be holding. All the things I want to remember are in the places I'd like to forget.

Well GGG actually promised that everyone can keep their names regardless of being inactive or not and i would imagine that simply deleting characters on inactive accounts would cause an uproar among the players.

Tbh I think Diablo 3 had it right when it came to how names was handled in the game. Meaning that when you chatted you used your account name(easy to identify people when they are playing one of their many alts) and that no names ever could be taken( hidden number tag just got added behind the name).
I realise PoE is an oldschool type of game. Am an older gamer myself started playing computer rpgs around 1992. But the whole unique naming thing doesn't work anymore with potentially hundreds of thousands of players sharing a namingpool. It just gets tedious with all the "name taken" messages popping up when you are naming a character. Am used to using around 10 names or so in games but several of them where taken in PoE even though they are very obscure. Not being able to use a name you like might seem trivial but it can be abit annoying. |

People who supported the game should get to keep them. Wipe the others IMO.

" I say wipe all names in a future patch and add an invisible tag system like D3 where invisible numbers get added behind the name so you can have whatever name you want. You would rename the toon after such a name wipe when you log in for the first time with it. This is pretty much a must. Having unique names is like I said in my previous post not realistic. Let me illustrate. Lets say 300k people download and try out PoE. This is not unreasonable considering it's a free to play game with alot of hype and exposure. And every one of those players will on average have say 3 characters. A conservative estimation since the game is all about creating new toons for ladders, trying out builds because of no D3 respec system etc. Now we are talking about roughly one million reserved names. It is just crazy. To compare with a mmorpg like WoW back when I played in 2006. Realms used to consist of about 10-15k players. Probably at most 50k reserved character names. " This would lead to some issues because it would involve breaking 2 promises GGG gave to the community, the name wipe itself since they promised to everyone that they are able to keep their names and the 2nd stat wipe this would involve since a name wipe most likely wouldn't work without it. Also this would mean that everyone regardless of his playtime and how actively he's playing PoE would be in the risk of loosing all his charakter names simply because he's at work/school/whatever at patchday and somebody grabs his names. This would piss a whole lot of players off and I'm saying that as a person who uses niche names wich aren't hard to get again after such a wipe. |
