Some people enjoy having wealth, im not sure why people cant grasp that :P

Its nice being able to buy whatever I want whenever I want :)

And you guys seem to have a distorted view of the wealthy players in PoE - we dont sit in trade chat flipping low uniques and items worth a couple chaos for 10 hours a way, the smallest trades I make are 3 or 4 ex, with the average being closer to 10 ex

A handful of these trades in between doing what I enjoy about PoE (mapping) isnt even a pain in the ass

Yes, that's pretty much "either you're a trader or you're actually playing the game, but you can't do both".

don't matter how much exalted orbs ya got if you can't stand to play the game in the first place

:D
I LOVE to play POE and i LOVE to trade and i can do both :)..

Yeah, its not a problem to make 100+ Exalted.
Trade your 14 Regrets to 1 Ex
..
Trade your 1 Ex to 16 Regrets
..
In 14 trades you have extra 1 Ex - that's about ~ 1-2 hours.

Players who do it all day long will have 100's Ex no doubt.
Most players, including myself, spend time killing monsters.

THIS says it all

And people do it wit items... currencies.

I farm 95% and sell 5%... That 5% can earn me more than the 95% but I find it too boring.
Actually I fill my stash tabs (alot) and then I vendor or trade a whole day. Got 10ex on 1 day once but that was a month worth of farming and selling lvl 20 gems which took 2 months to become lvl 20

Yeah if you flip you can make about 1 exalt a day without trying very hard.

All you need is about 3 exalt to start. But most noobs use their first exalts before they even find 3 in the first place =p

That said, I suspect many people actually are using RMT sites to get their Shavronne's and Soul Takers.
I am fairly new to this game, started playing Nemesis on release, this is my mule account, for self rush/wp and other things. In the new leagues, I think it's reasonable and fairly easy if you play efficiently. I have around +30 exalts, and it took me awhile to get that and to understand the game. So previous posters are right, you need knowledge. I can imagine someone who is a veteran can have 100++ easily but I'll share a few things off my head.

I don't over-gear myself, used blues with cap res until 70 and always invest in weapon first
Stack IIR IIQ if possible and weapon swap for more IIR with item rarity gem
Farm Merv, Piety, keep and sell leveling gear for a few chaos each
Only chance the most profitable unique in game to sell
Pick up and sell all RBG 3 links for chromatic orbs
Shop NPC for RBG for chromatics and 6 socket items for jeweler orbs
If you can do 70+ maps sell craftable gear
If you want to 5-6 link something it is better to buy it than rely on RNG in the long run.
Do not farm low level area unless it is for gear progression, most profitable items drop in higher level maps, they can sell for exalts+

In sum, if you can't map, I don't think it's possible to get rich without flipping in trade unless you want to farm Piety 24/7. And yes, flipping is the most profitable but it is as boring as farming, subjective though. Make a shop thread and bump every time you log in, enter trade chat and flip whenever you want. Don't hate, but as long as there is trade, it will always be the most profitable system if you do it right.

I can imagine how much easier it would be in softcore since you don't have to worry about death as much and build your character differently.

Pay to win, trade to win, farm to win, w/e, whoever invest more time and effort than you and more efficient than you, will always be better than you. Therefore pretty much this
