after seeing D3 beta streams, I'm now convinced that...

While both games are trying to take the ARPG genre in new directions, to me it's very clear which games are made by which type of companies, just from the videos alone.

Diablo 3 is made by a large corporation with high expectations placed upon them. This means they're less willing to do more risky moves with their game, and will rely on more time-tested mechanics. As Blizzard North is no more and the devs are not with Blizzard, development influence is in other hands. The reason why it looks like WoW to so many is because it's probably being developed by some of the same people who worked on WoW - they're just doing what they know works and I can't blame them with that. At the same time, what they're doing just isn't my cup of tea. I can see where it will be someone else's and that Diablo 3 won't be a timeless game like it's predecessor was. That said, I have no doubt that overall it will still be a good game. Diablo 3 is made by a corporation first, devs inexperienced with developing ARPG genres second, and fans last.

Path of Exile is a game being developed by a group of guys who played and loved ARPGs so much that they wanted to make their own. They have no expectations placed upon them as PoE is the first game they've created, and is a F2P game as well. This lets them branch out and experiment with ideas that Diablo 3 could never do: the way active and passive skills are handled, the monetization of items and elimination of gold, custom leagues, etc. To me this is reason enough to be interested in Path of Exile; they're doing something new and exciting rather than relying on time-tested mechanics to meet expectations. Path of Exile is made by fans first, devs inexperienced with developing ARPGs prior to the project second, and a corporation last.

I have an incredible amount of respect for the GGG guys; they're trying some very risky mechanics that no one has ever seen in the genre before... on their first game. Even the removal of gold is something that you need a lot of confidence to do, seeing as it's become standard. I find GGG is taking a much needed look at the genre standard set before them and are asking the hard questions that a lot of development teams would rather not ask.

In short, D3 and PoE are likely going to both be good games, just for different types of people. In my opinion, people familiar with older ARPGs with an open mind to new systems will likely enjoy Path of Exile more, while people who would prefer a more standard approach to the genre with more familiar systems implemented will probably enjoy Diablo 3 more.

This post should be voided since it's the other way around. D3 is doing the new things while POE is not...

...Everything about PoE is new..
New Skill System.
New Attribute System.
New, better classes. (Witch>Witch Doctor)
Better graphics. (than Diablo 3, imo, the art style)
It's F2P which is new.
It's dark and gritty, unlike Diablo 3.
Just to name a few.

An elimination of gold, passive skill sphere (with stat gain on every sphere), active skill gems that gain experience, and flasks that refill after each kill are all core mechanics that havn't been seen inside the ARPG genre. Another thing to note is that the changed mechanics were changed to add to the genre, as there were genuine game design issues in the ARPG standard that GGG is attempting to address, rather than just go along with.

While you can take some of these mechanics from other games in different genres with a stretch, these are all unique to the ARPG genre.

The closest way I can think of how active skill gems are dealt with for example, is a combination of FF7's materia and Disgaea's weapon levels.
I'm certain that there are other games with primitive bartering systems in place, but I'm also certain that they don't exist inside the ARPG genre.

Yes, I agree this game looks more exciting at the moment. Im kind of disapointed with D3...

Same. I don't think it's going to live up to the hype.

Dont forget, Blizzard games ALWAYS live up to hype, and then some more...
Am I wrong? Example please?
Cataclysm and sc2 although both are opinions
Rawr I Have arrived.
I'm definitely digging on PoE's grittier style.
D3 can keep its rainbows and unicorns.
Pudding can't fill the emptiness inside me! But it'll help.
I will buy Diablo 3 and ignore those haters.
Don't get me wrong, I'll be buying Diablo 3 too. But I can hate on one or more aspects of it while I enjoy the others :P

Definetly agree, I've been watching diablo streams and this does indeed look a lot better. Dunno tho about the release version on diablo 3.
i havent played d3 or poe so i can only tell you my opinion based on videos but i think both could be really great games.
d3 will be a highly polished game but i dont know if the "feeling" of the endgame will be anything like d2. especially with the real money auctionhouse. d2 was always a game where you compared your characters equipment with others. when somebody just buys himself the best equipment without "working" for it will be something i dont want to have in a game.
but poe also has to show us a good endgame. i.e. equipment you have to work for.

I vote for PoE, Diablo 3 is a total disappointment to me after the beta footage.
and the real-money auction house doesn't do it for me.
