I read this whole thread with some interest, and just finished today. It’s a long thread it took me a while.

I find it interesting because I just found the OP’s request very strange. It’s either a very persistent and truly masterful 10/10 troll, or sincere. There’s nothing wrong with the request per se of course it just strikes me as inane. It’s like if you enjoy reading mystery novels and rock concerts, and you go to a rock concert and start asking if anyone wants to start reading, it would be a little silly, although I understand the desire of trying to find people who fit certain traits.

Small trivial but atypical acts such as this hold an odd fascination for me, it’s just an idiosyncrasy of mine. Anyway:

Point the First:

I think a person’s associations with other people need not be complete ones to enjoy the company of others. While it would be nice to find someone who likes both mystery novels and rock concerts, it’s probably better to find people who like mystery novels and people who like rock concerts and accept that there’s going to be diversity in the people in your life.

Point the Second:

The resulting discussion engendered here is interesting too, and I just wanted to throw down a point as a theist. Being theist (or atheist or agnostic or anything else of the sort) doesn’t correlate to the person being rational or irrational. Belief in religion or (agnostic-)(a)(the)ism is as incompatible with being intelligent and rational as being a plumber would be incompatible with being intelligent and rational. For that matter plenty of theists come to the belief in god or a religion as a personal decision following a rational and logical thought process.

Since Einstein was brought up, I’ll bring up his much less famous peer Gödel. The two used to converse, and in fact it was their debates about god, God, or a god-machine, whatever you wish to call it, which gave Einstein the impetus to express his views which are summarized earlier in the thread (quick recap, Einstein basically said maybe there is a god, but rejected the idea of a personal god outright)
.
Gödel, on the other hand, not only believed in God, but believed God was personal. He even wrote a proof of God, and used causality (from physics) to argue there has to be an afterlife too. Einstein did not agree with Gödel’s ideas, but the two conversed on the subject constantly and were colleagues. Gödel isn’t famous but I’d argue he’s easily as brilliant as Einstein, and even if that does not ring true to you, his accomplishments are still very impressive in my opinion.

My point isn’t that you should or shouldn’t believe something because some smart guy did or didn’t, the point is that there’s smart rational people who believe all sorts of things, and there are stringent arguments for the existence of a deity out there many of which have nothing to do with religion. And there are good arguments that have everything to do with religion. For example C.S. Lewis wrote a fascinating book called “Mere Christianity” which is completely unlike the rigid logical arguments of Gödel or Descartes, but is compelling in its own right. There’s probably similar examples for other religions, but I haven’t looked into it myself.

As for myself, I recognize that 1) I have the ability to discern between existence and nonexistence by perception and 2) things I know to exist by perception, like my toaster at home, exist in reality outside of my conception of them. I perceive God as existing, therefore God exists in reality outside my personal understanding of what God may be. Why others disagree this is the case is fascinating to me; why do people believe my toaster exists but question the existence of God when both are validated by the same cognitive processes, it boggles the mind.

So many people at that point, whether they agree with my ideas or some other ideas, just call the people who don’t think like them “retards” or “idiots” and leave it at that. I personally reject that, I don’t think people are deficient for not agreeing with me any more than I think people are bright or exceptional just for agreeing with me. Rather I seek to answer the question, what makes our perceptions so different we can live similar, nearly identical existences, in the same place in the same universe in the same time, and come up with such different answers to the same question?

That to me is far more fascinating than the original question of the existence of God, which I’ve already resolved and most other people have resolved it too (deciding not to resolve it is in itself resolution). I wish sometimes we could put aside our personal answers to the original question and get at why there’s a diverging opinion in the first place without resorting to trivialities.

However I personally will look for those answers somewhere besides in Path of Exile. It’s all right if my PoE friends are not my theist friends and vice versa.
I highly doubt science can explain this

So religion is the only way.

BTW this thread is stupid, and close minded.
