Throwing Weapons?

I think throwing weapons definitely have a place in POE... here's how I'd implement them:

At melee range you can do a fast melee attack with the weapon. At ranged you can do a slower attack by throwing the weapon.

The versatility would be countered by its speed/damage/accuracy attributes and would provide a mechanism not seen in other weapon categories (fast melee/slow ranged)

Again another interesting idea but I would prefer for them to be a separate item. Mostly because the mods for a good throwing weapon may not be good mods for a melee weapon.

Throwing weapons have a place, but if they will be in, they should be more useful than they were in D2. (javelins don't count)
As long as they are balanced below 2h weapons for melee and ranged weapons for ranged, I think that they would be useful. No other weapon class offers this combination.

Because they would be superior to ranged weapons in melee range, they would have to take some sort of penalty though.

Okay for one, this game is not realistic. I mean, are fire swords real? Big ice novas?
No. On the throwing weapons front, I would love to see some axes, spears, knives, stars, etc. My personal fav. is throwing axes, as I feel they were badly implemented in Diablo 2. The real potential of this comes out with the whole socket and skill relation. Throwing weapons could add a whole new dimension of zombie killing fun.
Throwing items could have a place in POE, but unless there's a class specifically made around them, I think that they are an "extra" feature that would require too much balancing/mechanics work to make them useful. They'd probably be good for a future patch, but at release I'm betting there's enough feature creep as it is.
Throwing weapons have no functional difference from bows unless you give them a functional difference as I described.

They really would not require much at all to be balanced unless their functionality was significantly different from what is currently available.

+1 for throwing weapons in PoE like in DII (for example the legendary barbarian + 2 throwing axes ).

Can this be moved to suggestions since it seems to be the biggest suggestion thread on throwing weapons.

My thoughts on throwing weapons:

I like the idea of a ranged weapon useable with a shield.

Pros and Cons Vs Bow

Less range
harder hitting
Useable with a shield
Lower precision
Lower Critical chance

The shield use balances it out with range,since your going to be closer you would need the extra tankage.I think skill gems with them should be about smaller but stronger AoE skills than what bow skills are.Also AoE should be far enough away from the player to distinguish them from Melee AoE skills.
