Mixed Emotions about Open Beta arrival.
" This was raised a while back and was quite vocally voted down as elitist and segregating. The newcomers are going to benefit from our experience only if we share it, not if we hole up in some ivory tower pining for the good old days. Zalm: absolutely no reason why such discourse cannot continue. Besides, I'll be back in-game soon, and you do strike me as the sort to happily @ a fellow out of the blue, which is something I'd like to have happen more often but apparently people find me intimidating. To which I say: :P. We were all new once. How did we deal with it? By reading, asking questions, experimenting. I don't see Open Beta being any different to Closed Beta there. We handled those open weekends just fine, and I think they had more 'curious passersby' by than Open will, at least at first. Open will be for all those people who have probably played but don't want to lose their gear/levels *again*. I'm not entirely convinced Open Beta will initially have any more 'newbies' than any given Open weekend. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between. I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period. Last edited by Foreverhappychan#4626 on Dec 3, 2012, 10:07:56 AM

" Maybe we could have some sort of Veteran icon on our account or in game? Something that gives no benefit over other players, but makes us look special and unique?... Just like the stuff ur going to sell on this page. |

" This discuss has been about community spirit, not about marking yourself as being different from others.

If we have a veteran icon, new players will know who to ask for help when they ask the usual.... What to do with the gylphs in Mud Flats? How to remove the roots from the enterance to vaal ruins? Should i kill all 3 bandits? Stuff like that..... would work well to help the new players. I,ve heard question like this 100000 times, but the experienced players do help them alot. This means that when OB comes, they would know that the people with a veteran icon are the ones who knows the most because they played PoE back when it was closed beta. Because the new players are not going to ask each other right??... Normal chat is going to be one big global spamfest of questions from new players when the game goes OB, and i hope that the new players will not get thrown off because no one is helping them.
...Or maybe the game needs a tutorial?... I dont know wutsoever... But i dont think it needs a tutorial. It just needs some of the experienced players to help the new players... I think. |

Honestly I didn't find a lot of the closed beta crowd to be as helpful as I'm hearing. Few days ago, a new player found an exalted orb, and so many people were trying to rip him off for it. I had to send him a message to "hold onto it". Ripping off new players is bad karma, and if you do that I hope the RNG gods screw you permanently.
There are going to be tons of the OB crowd looking to scalp stuff that new players find, like valuable orbs, and if I see anyone trying to do that I will personally say something about it. Maybe we should have a special thread to expose the ones who try and scalp new players? Shame on you. If I'm in the game, and got the chat box open, I'll make sure those newbs you all are trying to scalp know the value of what they got. Last edited by crimsonedge11#4956 on Dec 3, 2012, 10:36:49 AM

Uhm, most people are actually in it for themselves, they have motives and agendas.
Apart from that, the community is also completely elitist with a sprinkling of pseudo-hardcore. There is arrogance and poor reasoning everywhere you look. The veterans are no better than anyone else. I'll also include myself in that. Basically all it comes down to is if you end up being a zealot or not. |

WHAT ABOUT THIS??
When the game goes OB, GGG creates a new thread explaining EVERYTHING that the new players need to know about the game..... If the new players fail to read this, then it is their own fault XD. |

" Yeah people here seem to have a pretty rosey view of the community. For the most part they would be right I guess but with a closed community there hasn't been anything to really challenge that. The real test will be how the current community reacts when the forums and global chat gets flooded with " FFA sucks!" And " we need a ful respec option". Then a very predictable break down in civility will happen as people choose sides and people's true colors will show. After all its easy to be nice when Tue company you keep is like minded, the real test of this community will be its reaction to those who may want something different out of the game. My predictiom is it will be no different from from any other game. Those that have been here for a while will defend every design choice to the death probably labeling those who.disagree as noobs, casuals or what ever while those on the opposite end will come back with words like elitists. We have seen small instances of this happening even now, we will see what happens to the community when its not so easy to sweep it under the rug. |
