"A Character with this name already exists."

Cus namehunting is fun :L
Also account name hehe
For the record, I got the name "Sit" only yesterday, I haven't even been holding it on a noob account, so probably some other rare names still untaken :)
For try for see and for know.

This is the sort of naming system that leads to xXxSefferoth420xXx. Instead of being an unoriginal ponce, you end up being an unoriginal ponce with a name that hopefully nobody will ever actually name their kid in real life (not that I recommend naming your kid Sephiroth). I believe most Sefferoths would rather be Sephiroth, if given the opportunity. I'd rather see Sephiroth run around than xxxAnythingxxx, but that's me personally.

I have to go with the John Smith argument on naming. In real life, having the same names is a normal thing, which is why we have driver's licenses and social security numbers provide other means of identification. The unique account should be the identifier, in cases of two or more folks with the same name. Besides, how many John Smith's do you actually meet in real life?

Give the people the ability to be creative, and those who want to be will. Force them to be creative and the ones who don't want to be still won't. Which is better is up for debate, but I know one of them means I can't use any of the names I've used, and gotten attached to, for characters in the last 20 some years of my life. I wasted several minutes trying, and several more posting here.

If you want to tell me it's passé to call a character Sephiroth, fine I can deal with that. Still it's never going to find its way into the 1000 most common baby names. Any of my top 50 choices likely similarly won't, and they too are unavailable. I suppose it's my fault for wanting a simple, memorable, only mildly unique and interesting name. In my opinion it beats something only pronounceable by telling folks "it sounds like Alan" when they try the first time, or the phrase-as-name thing, or the random additional bits added on.

And what's wrong with a guy named John anyhow? I still don't normally see more than one a day, if that, despite how common it supposedly is. You don't see a dozen Sephiroths running about, unless a group decided to troll that day. At least, not since folks grew out of FF7 being the only interesting game they'd played to that point. You see xXxSefferoth420xXx and assume there are another 500 of him out there somewhere or he wouldn't have chosen that name. Really he's likely using the same name he did back when he first needed to make a "unique" name.

I don't expect any of this to change, but it is cathartic to vent from time to time. Thanks to anyone who ended up reading this. Sorry, no I can't give you back the time you wasted doing so.

Now I'm off to name my folks after Gandalf, Batman, Sephiroth, Katniss, Drizzt, and Hermione, because I can do that but not get any of the names I really cared about. :P

It's not just about the ingame character name, but about a unique working handle on all chars. If you allow repeat names the system has to be revamped to force everyone to address others by something else unique, in this case most likely "name+account name". Which would cause massive disruption on the present chat/trade windows UI. You'll also have to remember everyone by the name AND account.

Not saying it won't work, but given the complexities i'd rather things stay status quo.

The "alternate" system that people keep suggesting leads to the same destination. The differnce is that the player would have no choice in their "real" name. xXxSefferothxXx would really be Sefferoth134179 when the server picked a unique id. The character would show as "Sefferoth" which could cause confusion and ill will if another person with the "same" name acted differently.

Miley Cyrus. Who is she? Who is Obama? Does Elvis ring a bell?

How about Charan or Morsexier or Helman?

Nice necro. Laughing at some replies I've missed.

Just like in real life, you cannot have the same name as someone else. Why is it so hard to understand this?

Dafuq? I agree that names should be exclusive to a single character, but I have no idea what makes you think that's "just like in real life".

What??? Yes you can and an id number that singles you out. You just validated the OP.

Haha.. really? :)
I just finally got around to playing this game and so far this is the only real complaint I have (aside from being 3rd person isometric view which is more my problem). This naming system is ridiculous. I don't mind that they are doing unique names but it's so restrictive! They should have included punctuation like "'" and "-" and they should have included surnames. That would have opened up the possibilities by a huge margin.

Sitting at the character creation going through dozens of names that "already exist" is not so fun. At the very least there should be a random name generator that will just randomly create available names.

That's not a word.

It is a real word, it's just not grammatically correct.

Irregardless, usage of a grammatically incorrect phase does not invalidate the users opinion.

Came up with cool names for his characters and didn't have a problem with any names.

Still spends hours watching people arguing on both sides of the same coin.

Knows that people wanting a system where more than one of any name would cause more problems than the one it will solve.

Watches them waste time about it even though it will never happen.

A word that only adds "ir" in front of it to mean the same thing.

However:

https://www.google.com/#q=definition+of+ir

http://www.spelling.hemscott.net/prefix3.html

http://ell.stackexchange.com/questions/672/how-should-i-use-the-in-im-il-and-ir-prefixes

Therefor, the word "irregardless" means to regard.

Ex 1: Regardless of the mods, you'll play the map

Ex 1 translation: Without regard to the mods, you'll play the map.

Ex 2: Irregardless of the mods, you'll play the map.

Ex 2 translation: With regard(s) to the mods, you'll play the map.

P.S. The spell checking system for this post told me that "Irregardless" is incorrect. It suggested "I regardless" and "Regardless". This proves that, at most, it is only a slang term and is not officially proper and part of the English language. I have also checked this on updated versions of Microsoft Word and Works.
