"A Character with this name already exists."

Well played, dornal.
GGG should send an email to all inactive accounts. When the player does not log in to the game within a certain time frame, the characters will be renamed and the original names are available again. SWTOR did this, maybe it is a good approach to make some cool names available again....

If someone else has already used it then it's not an original name, so it can't be cool any more.

So what?

No really, why exactly is this a problem? You can have characters identified by an ID number instead of their name for database purposes, and you can have people use unique account names for PM's (which is preferable for communication, IMO, since if you can see an account name you can tell that PenisMuncher17342 is one of your friends on an alt instead of a random noob with no creative ability).

So I see someone on trade chat post something I want to buy. I type in their name. There are two people with identical names that are currently online. How does the client decide which account that whisper goes to?

I just want to be able to type in someones account name and be able to whisper them irregardless of their character's name. If someone doesn't make a character that has the same name as their account, or doesn't post their IGN on the forums it is impossible for me to contact them.

You can always try stalking them on Poestatistics.

I see this topic way too often in this game. Seriously people are you lacking that much in creativity that you cannot create your own names.

Stop using the most obvious or popular names from shows or video games. Or if you must insist on it, try making a slight variation in the name. I wanted to name my Templar Mithradates after Mithradates of Pontus, the poison king. Name was taken so I changed it to Miphradates. Worked fine and now I love my own variation on the name.

1) Why do you even care?

2) It doesn't have to be the most obvious or popular name, all it has to be is one other guy coming up with the same idea for a name as you did one second before you did and your name is gone.

Oh, and you name is now a misspelling of some figure that people may or may not care about. Assuming someone knowledgeable enough to know what your name is and caring enough about your name to actually read it does, in fact, look at your name, then they're going to think you're a tool that can't spell.

Diablo 3 got this one right: character names are totally meaningless, there's no reason whatsoever to bother with them.
It sucks, but there are cool names that are not taken. I found this gem, just the other day.

Why not pick name u like and add and underscore at the end.

Stop being so fckin picky. It won't break any of your nerdy solo RPing immersion and really the only time YOU see your name is when u type in chat or have character screen up. And your the only one that cares.
You lose individuality if you don't allow unique names. Your idea is trash.
