Please Help Clueless New player with Trapper/Miner Build
Hello I am interested in making a character who uses traps and mines as a means of attacking and defending and I have a ton of questions to ask:
1) is shadow the best character to make for it ( or is it in the best tree position?) traps and mines are dex and int based so its reason i made shadow. 2)what effects trap damage? this one is confusing for me also what stats do i use to boost damage? does intelligence/ cast speed / spell damage /etc spells effect them in any way or is it minion passives that boost them? 3)I intend to max out every single passive tree skill for traps and mines, but making a good plan around tree is becoming hard as I am planning it out any tips on paths appreciated. 4) what about equipment what should i be looking for besides mana to spam more of them and resist to tank? and is it going to be evasion armors or magic characters stuff with mana shield? any information is appreciated a lot. |

1) playing shadow too. Guess Scion works also. But will try a Ranger since i think he's capable of going a more elegant way through the skill tree... In the end you decide. 2)Traps are affected by Nodes referring to their keywords. so as an example: firetrap (Fire, Trap, Spell, Duration, AOE): increased trap damage, increased fire damage, increased elemental damage (since fire is elemental), increased spell damage, increased area damage. Minion passives wont have any effect. intelligence wont boost damage since int only affects mana and energy shield cast speed... well dunno tbh. but i think increased throwing speed would be the better way to go. Correct me if i'm wrong :D 3)well... cant give any tips since i'm not satisfied with my build... it's similar to yours but im not happy with the energy shield/evasion defense... will go for life/max evasion instead. but look for youtube videos... there you can find some decent tutorials on how to plan a character... For me i'll think i'll start new over with a ranger... Downside is: trappers do have a lack of life regen. Energy shield was the way to go in open beta... but dunno if something has changed. |

oh and: for gear i would also take into account two uniques... dunno which one would be better or if you should take both but i would consider em:

Alright lets help each other out as I started a trap build a few days ago and have to admit its the most insanely fun build I have ever played in path of exile!
What I found out so far: - Shadow seems to be the most useful "class" to pick for this build, second closest might be Scion. - Don't take mines, its more defensive / support type (no damage) and cant be thrown (have to be up close and personal). - Don't focus on one type of trap. I use Fire and Lightning for area and beartrap for single targets. - shit is mana hungry, cheapest throw now is 50+ per pop (in the end this might go somewhere between 75-100 per pop! and I throw an average of 2-4 traps a second with constant use of leapslam) and that's with using a less mana gem and your going to pop them like crazy so you need lots and lots of mana + even more mana regen. - the extra number of laying traps... not that much of a deal with multitraps you can lay down seven (so 2 x set of multitraps + 1 more)and most will instantly pop as soon as they hit the ground. Due to leap slam you probably best bound to a mace (increased magic damage)with shield or staff. Hmm this is what I know so far ... lets hope this is a lil usefull. well your build is pretty close to mine atm...
Question is: Is Ghost Reaver so useful in your CI-Build? Dont have any experience with it but startet an Energy Shield build too and the traps... do they leave enough room for life leech? btw i was thinking of using elemental equilibrium... why? "trap-multiple traps-cold snap-?" as an opening to freeze enemies =>cold damage; chance to freeze "lightning trap-multiple traps-chain-elemental proliferation-?-?" => try to shock; lightning damage which resistance is weakened due to cold snap "fire trap-increased area of effect-concentrated effect-?" =>usage of shock stacks; fire damage which resistance is weakened due to lightning trap bear trap is still somewhere in my build :p curse to go: maybe elemental weakness... with elemental equilibrium you get a whopping -99% to elemental resistances escape maybe a leap slam... Auras depens... definitely "Clarity" + "Discipline" and/or "Grace" depending on defensives what do you think? viable combination? |

Not sure whether Ghost reaver is viable or not (I have my doubts to be honest at least without Vaal pact) its my first time going CI.
for the trap-Multi-cold snap how effective is it ? freeze mine is pretty good for freeze but down side is you have to plant it instead of throw. for the fire trap + concentrated effect I was thinking of using that myself but somehow worried about the area would be to small as at the moment it creates nice big fields which burns and kills large groups quickly. but could be interesting. bear trap is amazing for rare and unique bosses, pins them down nicely on does great damage. Perhaps ill take a second set of firetrap with conc. effect for single targets. so I can pin en burn rares/uniques from a save distance (and laugh evily while seeing them being helpless). curses would be good to use yea haven't been using them thus far but elemental weakness would definitely be good. I use leap slam all the time to move over packs of enemies, keeps you on the move and them continuously chasing you so you can lay traps exactly where you want them to go. also great for quick escape over ledges and inaccessible terrain if you need a save area for a moments rest. Grace might be a good extra addition yea. at the moment I can run clarity + discipline with sufficient endless mana but don't have enough room yet for another 60% aura I'm also scared that it will leave to little mana to be used effectively. If Grace is to much perhaps you could use Purity then. |

well as for coldsnap-multitrap im not using it atm.
But my witch i created earlier had it and well... helped me out in locking mobs in place a bit... maybe an elemental proliferation would be helpful later on but have to be tested... (in the end my witch was specialized in cold damage... she freezed a lot)... this skill has a 49% freeze chance on lv 20 so i wanted to give it a try. and since it would be the third element in my trap collection it would synergize with elemental equilibrium... well i'll think i will tell you later if i can give some more input :) concentrated effect has to be tested also... with increased area of effect its downside is neutralized and 50% MORE (not increased) damage sounds so good... i'll have to try it. Since the fire traps should be some kind of mortal kombat finishing move :) |

There is a pretty detailed trapper thread on the Scion page. I'm currently going full Evasion trapper, and its very powerful so far (lvl 67).

Stats for gear: DPS - Spell dmg > Elemental dmg >>> crit/crit mod (physical dmg % will increase bear trap and EK trap) Defensive - Pick your run of the mill defensive stat build and stack. ES, life + AR, life + EV. Gem setup (this is constantly changing as I'm experimenting with different combos currently) Go to nuke: Fire trap - Fire trap, multitrap, added light dmg (will change this to inc. burning when I find or buy one) Secondary AoE: EK - EK, multitrap, inc fire dmg, faster projectiles in the new boots that include lvl 11 trap support. (this thing destroys mobs) Last AoE: Lightning trap - Light trap, Multitrap, added light dmg Single target: Bear trap, added fire Crowd control: Cold snap - Cold snap, trap, elem prolif, cold pen (this thing freezes whole packs permanently as the 4 sec CD is bypassed by making it a trap) Hope this helps, might have left some stuff out not sure. |
