[1.0.0] HALLOWEEN: The Full Evasion Trapper - Input needed



Why Halloween? Apart from it being the season and how I'm super happy with the way my trapper looks with carcass jack and all the meaty microtrans... well you zoom around tricking monsters with your traps and they leave nice treats for you thereafter. You go right on to the next trick or treat and no one can touch you because, guess what your raw zombie flesh exterior is slippery as a snake with Ondar's Guile and your undead minions are impeding their way. HALLOWEEN!

I've been meaning to do a trapper build for a while now but hesitated, waiting for Clever Construction to finally come around to make the build actually playable around Arc Witches and Gravicius. Now that that's here and a free respec came about, I started looking into making a trapper. Given the kiting playstyle required for a trapper (zero incentive whatsoever to face tank melee monsters), I thought that full evasion would work best with Ondar's Guile.

So, I've turned my Claw Reaver into what you see here now. It's tonnes of fun and I've got no regrets doing this. Yay! Unfortunately, it's not a perfect build, and I really need some help and advice from you guys on how next and what next to do.

HOW TO PLAY

As the name suggests, all I do is throw traps all day. Occasional kiting involved to lead creep onto the traps

Lightning trap + ele prof + incr lightning damage + multitrap + lightning pen
  • The starter skill. Plant and shock everything on screen
  • Damage is pretty low unfortunately. Was hoping for more. But the shock more than makes up for it even post nerf


Fire trap + Conc E + Fire pen + multitrap + chance to ignite + ele proliferation
  • The main AOE damage gem. Plant post shock and see things go boom
  • Conc E is paramount for big damage after the recent damage nerf
  • Multitrap on initial inclusion seemed bad as it decreased the damage quite substantially. BUT pairing this with increased AOE and with proper trap placement, monsters can be hit by multiple traps blast radius. VERY NICE!
  • Chance to ignite + ele prolif on top of the burning ground is a wonderful wonderful sight. A high leveled ele prolif more than makes up for the smaller area from concentrated effect.


Bear trap + added fire damage
  • your single target attack. straight forward


Conversion trap
  • optional, but good fun to see rares attacking mobs


Tanks: Raise zombie + minion life
  • good tanks given the kiting nature of the build. optional if you play in a party


Curse: Temporal chains (or elemental weakness)
  • TC for easier kiting. EW for faster killing


Auras: Purity + Clarity (and if possible later on, grace)
  • Mana intensive build requires clarity
  • Purity optional depending on gear. My gear sucks so will require this
  • I would like to have grace too when i have enough mana


CURRENT PASSIVE TREE

Key nodes:
  • Clever construction
  • High explosives
  • Acrobatics + phase acro
  • Ondar's Guile
  • I normally don't life Eldritch Battery, but need it here for the high mana cost


Trying to get following nodes:
  • Minion instability
  • Static blows
  • 18% life node circle
  • MOAR LIFE! (but where? no idea here...)

Comments:
  • Searing touch came from my old burning discharge build. Coming in super handy with the fire trap
  • Sunblast will probably be replaced at some point. The auto detonation is occasionally useful especially with lightning projectiles coming off, but for the most part creep die even before the count down can finish up
  • Atziri's foible, Perandus Signet and Rainbowstride are all there for the mana regen. I really want to get rid of Perandus and Rainbowstride at some point as I need more life, eva and resists


BUILD PROS
  • Kill stuff quick
  • Great support party member inflicting spork and burning ground
  • Kiting build keeps me alive for the most part
  • Ondar's Guile is a thing of beauty

[li]triple damage from fire trap (initial blast, burning ground, ignite) with shock stacks = what creep?[/li]
[li]interesting play style that rewards speed, reflexes and good positioning[/li]
[li]you actual press more than 1 button per fight. no boring double strike + melee splash for us thank you very much![/li]

BUILD WEAKNESSES AND THINGS TO FIX
  • Very very very mana intensive. Traps costing around 150 - 250 mana per cost
  • Socket intensive as well. 10 sockets at least just for lightning and fire traps. Don't bother with trigger gems on this build. There just isn't enough space!
  • Low life with only +150% currently (thinking of where else i can get it). The 3 mana uniques also contribute no life
  • No life regen or leech. Again, not sure where else I can get this. Kiting play style + copius flask use adequately addresses this usually, but build just dies in poison clouds or burning ground or chaos map mods when there's no escape or evading from the damage.
  • No movement skills currently, if that's your kinda thing


MONSTERS/SITUATIONS TO WATCH OUT FOR
  • leap slammers / flickers as they go right past your traps
  • poison / burning alchemists as the degen ignores your evasion and you have no leech
  • monsters in corners are annoying to kill with multitrap as throwing 3 traps into the wall isn't very effective. bear trap is your friend in such instances
  • while this is a ranged build, multitraps can't be thrown over obstacles (ala spark) and that's pretty annoying too particularly in barracks against hidden arc witches
  • So that's it, my halloween full eva trapper. I love the build lots and find it super fun to play. I've identified the key issues with it and am very much looking forward to reading your views and advice on this :)

I'm doing something alot like this. My resistances are crap, but I'm doing very good on the Docks.

I use those gloves for the auto curse and Deerstalker boots for more Trap bonuses.

i edited the post changing Increased AOE + inc. burn damage to C2I + Ele prolif. The damage increase from that is PHENOMENAL and the ele prolif more than makes up for the reduced trap blast area.

StoneWall. Very nice unique suggestions! i'll probably pass on the deerstalkers (was thinking of using it with cold snap perhaps) due to my mana needs, but that's definitely very interesting

I watched one of Kripp's videos about his Trapper and I use Ele Prolif on Fire Trap. With the AoE on Fire Trap, it just takes one little enemy to step on the burning ground to light up the whole mob.

But what is C2I?
I posted a few comments on your reddit thread. I think the easiest way to help with your mana problem is to use fewer support gems. Maybe chuck a reduced mana there instead or something. So far I don't feel like I've needed too many supports on my traps. In fact I ran all the way through the end of cruel using only multitrap on lightning trap, and with fire/bear unsupported. Having no stash to work with is part of the reason for that though.

I hear you have a mana problem, tiny suggestion, just put 1 point into the ES node unatural Calm right by the CI node. Since EB is being used, 12% more ES means more mana (^_^)

I had a Mana problem until I used Atziri's Foible. I've never taken so many Mana Regen nodes before in a build.

thanks for the suggestions guys! received some from the reddit thread as well and it all seems to be coming together. lemme give it a tweak and update you guys accordingly.
I have a thread about shadow trap builds (mainly for HC/Nemesis). You can do Acro/PA, Ondar's, and static blows, but typically have to give up some of the trap nodes to make it possible earlier.

But as you probably know, being able to shock things means more damage overall than you could get out of buying all the trap nodes you give up. This is especially true while grouped, but also solo.
