What is "Legacy"?

I'm not angry about the upcoming "migration" - I just don't understand.
What IS legacy league? On the left navigation under "leagues" it says that there are different ones, but I have no idea what they ARE. What does moving to legacy mean?

It's like non-ladder in d2. Old characters are moved there for balance purposes (to get rid of prepatch items in the new default league for example).

Legacy is a league, like Default League. Characters in Legacy League can only interact with other characters from Legacy. Oftentimes when there is a huge balance change, GGG moves characters from the Deault League to Legacy, so that the Default League can have a fresh start. Legacy League still is played with the most recent patch, but still contains powerful items from previous patches which cannot drop anymore.

I am still not understanding: Are the rules different? Will my character lose items / skills?
Why are people angry? I am just playing in a different "realm", but unless the rules are different, what is the significance?

The rules are the same, it's just that your character won't show up on the main ladder. This means no bragging rights for the cool people who can play 23 and a half hours per day.

It also means that all the loot people carefully hoarded over the last few months isn't available when starting new characters on the cool kids ladder. This makes hoarders feel suddenly worthless. ;p

Ok thank you. Maybe a small bit of information about what "Legacy" means could be added to the "Leagues" page on the left navigation.

To be honest, this surprises me. I hadn't imagined that there would be so many 14 year olds in a closed beta for this game (do they all own credit cards?). Somehow, I had expected a more mature community. I do hear the mature voices seeping through every now and then, but they seem drowned out in a sea of puerility. This is starting to become bothersome.

Yes, alot of us cool kids forget that we are beta testers first, and players seventeenth.

I'm losing 3 tabs worth of currency. But I look forward to the wipe and to adapt to the new changes. Support GGG, or be like Xtrem (IShootStuff), do a wa wa then leave to play Freecell.

I'm a "hoarder" with 25 stash tabs chock full of items. I'm looking forward to the migration. :)

GGG uses Legacy League migrations to avoid completely wiping the servers. That way people can still play with their old characters and items if they want to. You can't create new characters in Legacy Leagues. GGG doesn't want any balance feedback from the Legacy Leagues. Legacy League is basically abandoned as people remake their characters in the new Default and Hardcore leagues.
