Difficulty Level Naming

I'm a bit late to this discussion and like the general direction of suggestions (outcast..>>exiled) - and like the idea of Shark's recent comment about a 'weakling'-type label for the easy class (as long as sensitive noobs can handle it I think this could be motivating... though maybe for a trainee period or something so not part of the main level progression).

HOWEVER...
I feel like difficulty levels in MOST games are the same in that they describe changes in the world around the player. But if you look at what's going on with level changes logically it is more the case of the player and their skill/strength/status that are changing... and this enables them to venture into new worlds that are more hard core.
So what about using descriptions of the player and their progression (as others have suggested as a tie in to story elements).

Plus - I think, with the idea of using alternative difficulty level labels, you also have the opportunity to include another little clue such as making the names of levels use the same initials as the game itself (P.O.E.) with a fourth label that entices players with the subtle suggestion of a sequel/expansion to come.

E.G. Labeling the character themselves:
Pariah >> Outcast >> Exile >> *Deity*
Pagan >> Outsider >> Exile >> *Damned*

Or the player's predicament:
Pain >> Ordeal >> Exile >> *Despair*

If that panned out then ideally the final initial could hint at the direction of a future sequel (or the initial of a future expansion world, or the initial of the replacement for "exile" in a sequel or whatever)... I don't know why my suggestions all use the letter "D" for the final stage - it just worked out that way... but you get the idea.

I was just brain storming this exact idea, I think it works perfectly with the story...and I think I've said it before, but it focuses on the importance of the character's social standing.

I think Shark asked if this was similar to Fable; I don't think there's that element in this game where you're given a choice of between evil and good deeds - shenlong is referring to a hierarchy of social standing. If you compare it to D2's difficulty naming, Pariah is like Normal, and Exiled is like Hell. Hope that helps explain...

Where is your god now? I know it's long name... GODDAMNED? =D
I feel pretty, Oh, so pretty,
I feel pretty, and witty and gay,
And I pity Any girl who isn’t me today!
Here some of my suggestion:
-NIGHTMARE
-INSANE
-IMPOSSIBLE
-THE HARDEST...
Forsaken
You should beat the difficulties in this order: to unlock the next ascending level of difficulty.

1: "Wretched"
2: "Ruin"
3: "Forsaken"
4: "Unforgiving"
5: "Perdition"
6: "Perversion"
7: "Lunacy"
8: "Abyssal"
9: "Blasphemous"
10: "Sleepless in Wraeclast"

Having 10 difficulties would be BEYOND EPIC!

Here are the 4 I think will really give a "Doom"ish touch to it.

"Help Me!"
"Oh Crap!"
"No Freakin' Way!"
"*Censored*"

4 with a Metallic Theme:

"Virgin Steel"
"The Gauntlet"
"Guillotine"
"Iron Maiden"

4 with a Sarcastic Theme:

"Young and Dumb"
"Hard Pressed"
"Reality Check"
"Life's a B*tch"

10-12 difficulty levels? Geez. That is way, way to many. They would have to be so similar to be playable at all. I think 3 or 4 is best.

For mine I was intending it to be "pick a theme" for that last post and 3 difficulty levels depending on which theme the devs picked, and the 10 was kind of a joke and was posted before I knew that there would be only 100 levels at launch...

However it would be nice to have altered reality themes (which would each have a different naming structure per difficulty, possibly selected through leagues) so it could be a little more temperamental as far as the weather goes or a lot more hero type monsters spawn than in the normal theme...

It is just an idea that sounds kind of cool, Robot Unicorn Attack is the same as Robot Unicorn Attack Heavy Metal but with a REAL THEME CHANGE... this kind of idea, same gameplay, new graphics and sound.

I think it would be kind of funny to have a league where it is rainbows and call it Robot Diablo 3 Attack Afro Metal! Seriously that is ONLY ME... no one else will EVER find that funny... and chances are you could get sued for releasing such a League within a "Similar" game: Note that I use the term "Similar" VERY LOOSELY...
