" No, the a versus an situation is determined by the phonetic pronunciation, not the written characters. So the letter M actually starts with a vowel, an E, because you say EM when you say M. When you say Magic you use the M in its consonant form, with no preceding vowel. |

" Depends on how it's read. For example, mentally I don't convert RT to resolute technique. But with MFer, I do read it as a magic finder. |

" you are assuming that everyone pronounces it an 'em eff eh rr' where I pronounce it as 'mmffferere' therefore its 'a mmffererer' (sounds like an unhappy horse) |

I'm a forum warrior, i was born to post, raised to defend my league. Now my post has been removed, chained and exiled by mods who Ban. Ban is my brother; i do not fear it. I see it in the eyes of men and beasts that i troll. It will take me to play the actual game when i am ready and i am not ready.

In reply to arbait and slayer,
Yes, you are quite correct that if you wrote it as you say it then, in your cases, you would likely use an a instead of an an (anyone for coffee?). However, arbait's original post called into question another person's use of it. This implied that arbait thought that the person was wrong in their use. I honestly can't believe arbait was unaware of the more common use of the wording, or, if I am to believe it, I can't believe arbait has managed to live so long without finding out. Language is a fluid process, there are no definite right or wrongs - there's just most common and least common. Because the only point of language is to communicate something, there's little point in using uncommon language as no-one will understand you, so, in this respect, even though there's no right or wrong, the use of uncommon language is technically still wrong because you are more liable to miscommunicate. If I said "Horseradish are some melons thursday morning" it is a more incorrect sentence than "Bowelderdash, thats wot I say, bowelderdash" because one is still a communication whereas the other is gibberish. Because the OP used the 'most common' form of the known method of communicating, no matter how many hairs you split, they are still more 'right' than someone who uses a less common form of the known method of communication. One day, arbait's or Slayer's use might be the most common, at which point the two of you can bump this thread and have a good poke, but that day is not yet upon us, so I conclude as I started and declare that, no, the correct usage was used. |
