Even botting would have not made them widely available, only duping made it so each ladder season people could buy them off RMT and make high end RW's. Apples and oranges. The gaming world has changed a lot since D2, a lot of simple things are more complicated now. I really can't stand how people compare the two, even though their so alike but so different in many ways. For a free game, in beta, started from the ground up, etc this is a killer game. I wish they'd fix a couple things that I've already complained about, but I suppose they can't listen to everybody. The D2/D3 comparing is getting really annoying. And to say this is better than D2, I say I have to disagree. But that wasn't necessarily a bad thing :) GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence. I like Diablo 2 more because nostalgia and childhood. I like it because I love the lore. I love the skills, the way the game works. I love Median XL because again, nostalgia.
