Game Controller
I always hate how people respond to these threads, I much prefer playing games with a controller, always have always will, so while people might feel that the game is just "much better" with a M+KB, deriding people who dare to not play the way you do as trolls or idiots just says a heck of a lot more about you than the OP.
Personally I detest the "click to move" in games like this and it is one of the reasons I don't play them very much, I also enjoyed Torchlight a lot more on the XBox than I did on the PC for the same reason. I wish people wouldn't dismiss the idea of controller support so easily as developers might get a lot more out of it if they considered more support. But ohh well, the nature of internet debate is that if someone doesn't agree with you they must be a ignorant moron incapable of coherent conversation. The biggest issue for me in a game like this is allowing movement controls, I can use a controller mapper to handle anything else, but click to move just makes games a clickfest that I just don't enjoy very much or at least not for very long. |

" Agreed. DS3 could have been ok (nothing great), but that control scheme turned it into a train wreck. If you've played Sacred 2 on the PS3 you'd see that while it can work, it's not the same gaming experience, regardless of whether or not you enjoy the controller vs K/M more or less. " The main concern with using a controller is that it can have an unbalancing effect on PvP similar to if you could use WASD to move, as well as it changing the general feel of the game. Using the WASD keys or a controller to move while using the mouse to click your attacks gives you greater control, which can give you a huge advantage in PvP by allowing you to move separately from aiming and attacking. Strafing while firing with a ranged character becomes easy versus point and click so the difficulty of fighting large groups of enemies in PvE becomes easier. And while that might sound fun to some it is completely changing the dynamics of the game. You go from a Diablo style point and click to a Gauntlet style ARPG. While there is nothing wrong with either of these styles, at some point in development you have to decide on one or the other if you want a well balanced game. The point and click control scheme is the correct choice for PoE and adding controller and/or WASD movement support would have a negative impact on the game. Interestingly Diablo has said that they actually think the controller would work better in many ways and would make movement feel more natural but they felt it needed a way to make game interaction work better. They have also been hinting heavily for a console version and suggested that they might even add in controller support on the PC at a future date. (not at launch tho)
I think you can certainly make a game worse by implementing poor controls, but I think Torchlight for example shows that the game doesn't have to "change genre" to support a controller. Last edited by metfansc#0556 on Feb 3, 2012, 5:21:21 PM

Have any of you played Balders gate dark alliance or Champions of norrath? If not then you have no idea of how good arpgs can be with a controller...My wife and I still play all 4 of those games on my playstation 2...Love it! Even Blizzard is considering implementing it into diablo...just saying!

I would like to see controller support as well, mainly so a friend who has some wrist issues can come play, too. She has an interest in this game, but wouldn't be able to play very long on a mouse and keyboard without experiencing very intense pain (which she already gets plenty of, due to working on a PC all day).
Just would be nice to see the controls made more accessible for those that aren't as capable with hotkeys and a mouse. |

How would that even work?
Why not get a wireless mouse, get in a comfortable position and play with a HUGE monitor? |

" Which is why Diablo ended with Diablo 2 |

Nothing beats the M+KB functionality. Nothing. Requesting that the devs now butcher the UI to meet the needs of the mouth-breathing masses is hardly going to be met with happiness and light... :)
What's next? Maybe some of the all-pervasive auto-aim? "Controllers are good!" Unadulterated twaddle. FFA: The looting choice of Hardcore-Hero Manly-Men Griefers! Yo!

" you are being a child. stop insulting people. there is nothing wrong with wanting to use a controller. it is not indicative of anything other than the fact that you want to use a controller. arpgs would serve very well being controlled by a gamepad, and it would be optional. no ui butchering necessary. if you have a problem with some people getting a way to control a game they want that doesn't affect you in the least - you have issues.
