Can't install - "Bad allocation"
Howdy, I purchased beta access yesterday, downloaded the launcher and tried to install but the launcher goes through the following process: "connecting... checking resources... " followed by a crash. The first error message just says "Exception: bad allocation". When I hit okay, a Microsoft visual C++ runtime library error message comes up with "Runtime error: Program: C:/program files/grinding gear games/path of exile/client.exe - abnormal program termination"
So far I've tried deleting the launcher and redownloading it, but no cigar. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. Last edited by GnarlsDarwin#3558 on Aug 9, 2012, 3:29:18 AM Last bumped on Aug 8, 2017, 8:01:13 PM

Just bumping in hopes of a reply.

Hmm, that's very strange! Would you mind posting your system specs? This usually happens when your PC runs out of ram, but it shouldn't happen on the installer at all. Are you sure a virus scan or firewall isn't blocking the patcher?

Thanks for the reply!
I'm running an AMD Phenom II X2 555, 4gb of ram, Radeon 5770, Windows XP SP 3. I don't have any virus protection and my firewall isn't blocking PoE. I'm not running out of RAM either, as far as I can tell. |

One more bump... would love to play.

Hate to keep bumping but I'm getting no support from anyone. I've tried uninstalling all Visual C++ versions and reinstalling the latest. I've tried downloading the client through multiple browsers and reinstalling. I've tried the packcheck but it didn't seem to help.
Each time I try to run client.exe, I can get up to "checking resources..." on the page which shows recent patch notes - then it crashes and either says "exception: unable to map file", or "exception: bad allocation", followed by the Visual C++ "abnormal program termination" error. Surely there's someone out there who can make my supporter pack worth its purchase. |

It's probably a conflict between VC++ runtime and some OTHER (likely running) program installed on your computer that makes use of said runtime.
1) Run msconfig and uncheck stuff you don't need in startup (you can check them back on one by one later if need be). 2) Reboot, see what happens when you launch PoE. 3) If that doesn't work, check your systemtray and disable everything you don't absolutely need. 4) Launch PoE and see what happens. 5) If that doesn't work, hit ctrl-esc and go to processes. Shutdown processes you don't need. 6) Launch PoE and see what happens. 7) If that doesn't work run services.msc, and sort the list so you can see everything that's started. Look for something suspiciously useless, and stop the service. 8) Launch PoE and see what happens. 9) If that doesn't work, uninstall programs you don't need. What that means is up to you. With all that being said, I personally had too many issues with XP once SP3 was released. A while back I made the switch to Win7 once it became too inconvenient to only install SP2, and never looked back. Good luck! Last edited by Daemonjax#0396 on Aug 12, 2012, 9:56:18 AM

Thanks a bunch Daemonjax! I was finally able to get it working with your advice. I ran MSConfig and disabled a few startups; I believe it was either OpenOffice, winamp, Dropbox or something called kva8wr (virus probably). Was able to install it completely and run it well.
Thanks again! |
