[0.11.2] Onslaught League - Double Strike Duelist - 5 Aura's - 15% Lifeleech (updated on 19-07-2013)

Welcome to the "Double Strike"-Duelist Guide

Here's the idea behind this build: Since the new patch came out that buffed Melee I just needed to try this out as I am a big fan of Melee gameplay. So why not try this new idea out on Onslaught where things are much more difficult as on Hardcore. The result is great! Solo-ed all game and solo-ing maps goes easy and reached level 79 on my first character. Sadly I died to a massive desync, but decided to reroll the same build. The reason it's going so easy is the Melee buff and using a Claw. A Claw (that I'm using) gives 3% Leech, in the passive tree there is another 12% up for grabs. Combine that with IR and the idea was born to create a great and tanky meatgrinder!

I Also took Eldritch Battery, this allows me to run 5 Aura's (Discipline + Grace + Hatred + Determination + Haste). Once the gear gets upgraded I will also run Tempest Shield.

Why Eldritch Battery and not invest in Mana nodes?
Spoiler
I tried without Eldritch Battery. But without insane gear (lots of Mana + Int on gear) you will only be left with around 130 Mana, this is not enough for cursing alot, casting your Skelleton Totem and using your Traps.

!NEW! The build in Stages: !NEW!

Playing tactics & Bandit Rewards:
Spoiler
Normal Difficulty:
Spoiler
Act 1
You will start out by using Double Strike, Fire Traps, Bear Traps & Viper Strike. I've done all of Act 1 with only those four skills. You don't need anything else. Also don't stare yourself blind on getting a Claw this early level. Just get the highest DPS weapon you can. Once you find a Claw that is at the same level as your current weapon or a bit worse, switch to the Claw. The Life on Hit will help out (even in the beginning).

Be Carefull on Brutus. Use Fire Traps, Bear Traps and Viper Strike. Hit him once or twice, walk away, throw Traps and repeat this process. The same goes for Merveil. Make sure you are not below 50% Cold Resist when fighting her. Here you can actually stack up all your Viper Charges on her because she is much easier to tank. If you can max out your Cold Resist you can facetank her the whole fight. Once she reaches her second form stack her a few times with Viper Strike and finish her off with Double Strike (this will kill her spawns that come from her as well).

Act 2
No need for farming here. Just go straight to the Cave and then on to Chamber of Sins. You will only need Lightning Resist in Sins and using two Topaz Rings is adviced. After that you will go straight to Weaver to get one of the important Support Gems: Melee Splash. At this point you are around level 19, maybe a bit higher if you take it slow. Adviced is to get MultiStrike at this level as well. If you weren't lucky enough to find it buy it, you can buy one for 2 or 3 Chaos.

Next important thing to do is to get your hands on a +2% Manaleech item. You can get this stat on Amulets, Rings, Gloves or Weapons. Level up Melee Splash seperately from Double Strike, you can't sustain the Mana yet. Use a 3 Link with the colors: Red, Red, Green. For the rest of Act 2 you will use Double Strike + Added Fire + MultiStrike. For bosses again use Fire Traps and Viper Strike.

Bandits: Save Oak

Act 3
Farm City of Sarn for a bit to see how it goes. If you feel safe enough there go and progress. You should be using a Claw by now. Go for the high end Physical Claw because you will leech more with a high end Physical Claw then a fast one that might give you higher DPS. However with a faster Claw with lower Physical damage but higher DPS you will actually do less DPS. Your Aura "Hatred" and you Support Gem "Added Fire" scale of Physical damage, not on DPS. Thus the higher your high end Physical damage is the higher you end DPS will be. So don't be scared of using 1.1 APS Claws.

Also get your hands on a 4 Link. You will add Melee Splash to your Double Strike. The colors you need are: Red, Red, Red, Green. Suggested types are Armour or Armour/Evasion items. If you have a Claw with around 120 high end Physical damage and you have a 2% Manaleech item you won't get in trouble with Mana as long as you hit enemies. As soon as you have your 4 Link in place drop Viper Strike as it is no longer needed.

Progress through the rest of the Act and make your way to Cruel. If you feel to weak in a zone, go back to City of Sarn or Docks and grind for 1 or 2 levels.

Cruel Difficulty:
Spoiler
Start focussing at getting Evasion gear with Life and Resistances. Keep upgrading gear and try to get a 5L so you can add Faster Attacks as a support gem to your Double Strike. If you still didn't find an item with Mana leech you really should buy one. Keep the Kite Shield (Ceremonial) for resistances. Try to get one with a high ES roll on it as well so you will get more Mana, but life and resists are still your main concern.

Bandits: Save Oak

Merciless Difficulty:
Spoiler
Farm Ledge till level 60, farm Fellshrine till 66 and farm Sarn or Docks till 70. Progress then and get all the quests done. This will give you another 2 levels or so. At 72 you are ready to do maps.

Bandits: Kill all

How to handle Aura's
Spoiler
Used Aura's
Spoiler
- Hatred: Run it as soon as you get it. Big DPS Aura so really important.

- Grace: Also run this gem as soon as you can. By this time you will probably have gotten to Iron Reflexes and this is a really nice Armour boost (should get you over 50% damage reduction). In the beginning you can run this Aura on your Mana but I suggest linking it to a Blood Magic gem as soon as possible.

- Determination: Start leveling this Aura from level 31. If you feel you hardly take any damage you don't have to run it yet. If you think archers start to hurt, put it on as well. Also this Aura will be run on your Mana.[/u]

- Discipline: Start leveling this one as soon as you can. As you are Eldritch Battery this will give you a really nice Mana boost. I tend to run this on my life.

- Haste / Purity: When you reach Act 3 in Merciless you will probably have leveled up your Reduced Mana enough and your Mana pool will be at 1200 (easily). At this point you can pick on of these two Aura's. Pick Purity when you need resists (only temporarily). If your resists are good go for Haste straight away. However, level these gems up from the moment you get them to get the full benefit of them when you actually start using them.

How to run these Aura's
Spoiler
- Use a Reduced Mana on all Aura's (1 Reduced Mana is enough). Buy it asap!
- Use Grace & Discipline on a Blood Magic gem. Be sure to do this with a Reduced Mana gem as well otherwise your life will get raped.
- Dont start using Discipline untill you have around 2400 Life.
- Use a 4 Link with Grace, Discipline, Blood Magic & Reduced Mana. Colors you need on this item are: GBRR. Suggested type of gear is either Armour/Evasion or Armour/ES.
- Whenever your Reduced Mana levels try to recast your Aura's. Especially the ones on Blood Magic.

I have set up my Gems a little bit different as I got the Blood Magic Unique: Malachai's Simula. This way I cast both Discipline and Grace on my life for the same amount where I was to cast one Aura with a Blood Magic Gem.

This is not nescessary for the build but gives you some more options.

Aura's
Spoiler
Hatred, Grace, Discipline, Determination, Haste.
If you have resistance issues switch Haste with Purity.

Curses:
Spoiler
Go for Enfeeble.
As you are right in front of the mobs all the time Enfeeble is the only usefull curse.

Frequently Added Questions
Spoiler
What do you use for AoE in the early levels?
Spoiler
I only use Fire Trap as my AoE in the early levels. If you find this too slow or too hard feel free to level up as Cleave (I personally hate Cleave).

When should I be getting MultiStrike?
Spoiler
Level 19! You will be using it straight away with Double Strike and Added Fire and thus making your Double Strike an actual AoE attack.

Why not use Dual Strike and two Claws?
Spoiler
As you can see below you can get really good DPS with just one Claw. Plus the Energy Shield of the Kite Shield, the resists you can get on the Kite Shield and the Life you can get on a Kite Shield makes this a much more viable option to play. Also at the end you will sit at approximately 50% chance to Block. You will have to invest much more points to get this high with Dual Wielding.

Is Eldritch Battery really worth it?
Spoiler
A simple and short answer: Yes. I've respecced out of Eldritch Battery and took some Mana nodes. I could not cast all my Aura's and making this build alot less viable.

Well I hope I'll get some feedback on this and ofcourse I hope people will be trying out Melee more as it is totally viable. Also Twitch streamers as Helmannn and SuperNico (RIP) show us that (Top15 Onslaught).

Why that mask ?
The support gem Blood Magic has a multiplier of almost 200% on lvl 20

With the mask u wont have this multiplier. Once the aura's on life are cast I put on my normal Helmet.

I've never thought of that, god !!
Most people don't :)

I went from 1 Aura take 300 life to two Aura's taking less as 300 life

Why use shield instead of Dual Strike? Just for resists? Wouldn't you be better off replacing 1 DPS passive with Diamond Skin and dual-wielding? You'd have almost as much LoH between the 10% Attack Speed increase combined with the 100% damage modifier on Dual Strike vs 70% with Double Strike.

Ive been running almost exactly the same build in Onslaught but with Dual Strike instead and it seems to have enough survivability thus far. Do you plan to switch to Dual once you get more resists from gear?
Hello

Thx for your reply :)
The reason I use a shield is pure survivability. As it gives life (which another Claw wouldnt do) and it gives me free resistances. Also I get the ES I need for Eldritch Battery (it's the only item I will use that gives me ES). This way I can maintain my Aura's and cast my totem/traps/curse without problems.

Also the %block passives give me another 20% blockchance that will get me around 46% blockchance. Also when I get more ES on my shield I'll be able to run Tempest Shield which gives me another 4% so I will be able to block half of the incoming attacks.

I don't need the extra dps Dual Strike gives me, as I've upgraded my weapon and one ring and I'm almost at 5K dps.

Hope that clarifies some stuff :)

By shifting around a few points and dropping Leather & Steel (which seems entirely unnecessary given your other Evasion passives), you could pick up Diamond Flesh (+12 All Res) and get more block chance with dual-wield in addition to much more DPS. My version has also dropped the Life Leech passives from Claws, as you will easily hit the Life Leech cap with 2 or 3% Life Leech on one item.

Unless there's something I'm not seeing, your build gives you +14% Block Chance (making 38% on top of your shield, 42% with Tempest Shield) whereas the Dual-Wield Block passives would give you 24% on top of the natural 15% for a total of 39% and significantly more DPS.

On the other hand, I haven't made it far enough with the build to get EB yet, so maybe having the AR/ES shield is a necessity, but I think you would do fine with an Arm/Eva Chest and having your Helm/Boots/Gloves be Eva/ES.
