+80% crit chance with 2h melee weapons

There's a new buffed notable passive called "Pure Brutality" that grants "80% increased critical strike chances with 2h melee weapons". It also comes with 2 lesser passives, each providing "30% increased critical strike chances with 2h melee weapons". For an impressive total of +140% crit chance. Before patch 11.0, it was only +70%.

Now, because it says melee weapons, I guess it won't help my lightning strikes projectiles, even if I'm using a staff, right ?

Please someone, tell me I'm wrong...

I believe it actually does apply to Lightning Strike projectiles. The clause, "with Two Handed Melee Weapons," is only a restriction on what type of weapon you have to be holding to get the bonus.

Edit: Perhaps I didn't phrase that very precisely. "With Two Handed Melee Weapons" means that in order to get the bonus you need to be using an attack skill with a two-handed melee weapon. Whether that skill happens to shoot projectiles or not makes no difference. You still get the benefit.

Please correct me if i'm wrong but doesn't Lighning strike work that way that if you crit with the melee hit the projectiles crit as well (and of course if you don't crit nothing crit)? So in that case the node should work (since you mention a staff i guess you plan Pure Brutality, Hammer blow, Mean Strike and Serpant stance :P)

Though as i said i'm not 100% sure...

I should specify that the way I play my LS character, I usually not meleeing anything. I use shift+LS to launch projectiles from range.

The way I understand the mechanics of LS, specific weapon passives without melee in the name, like "increased physical damage with staves" works with both the melee and projectiles parts of LS. However, passives that includes the term "melee" only work with the melee portion of the Lightning strike, not the projectiles.

But its the first time a passives that grants critical strikes to melee weapon catch my attention... but I guess the same principles applies. I could be wrong though. PoE mechanics are weird sometimes...

If i remember correctly, Crit rolls per action, so if you use a skill and it rolls crit, all of the attacks are crit.

Not exactly..

There are passives like "6% increased Melee Physical Damage". That only applies to the melee hit of LS and not the projectiles because the bonus restricts what type of damage gets boosted. In this case, it's MELEE physical damage.

There are other passives like "6% increased Physical Damage with One Handed Melee Weapons". This one applies to both the melee hit of LS and the projectiles. The reason is that the bonus isn't restricting the type of damage that gets boosted; it's restricting the type of weapon that must be used to get the bonus.

Get it now?
Here's how I parse it:

"X% increased Critical Strike Chance with Two Handed Melee Weapons." = are you using a Two Handed Melee Weapon to make your attack? If yes, your Critical Strike Chance with that weapon is increased by X% for that attack.

If it only applied to melee attacks (IE the melee portion of attacks) with two handed weapons, it should be phrased "X% increased Critical Strike Chance for Melee attacks with Two Handed Weapons."

If it applied to all actions while using a Two Handed Melee Weapon, it should be phrased like the Serpent Stance cluster.

Ergo, Lightning Strike's projectiles should have their critical hit chance increased by these passives just like the melee attack portion is.

it crits, because it only specifies that the weapons are melee, as long as you are attacking with a 2h melee weapons it should apply, it wouldnt work if it said: "70% increased melee critical strike chance"
