Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.

So I post here instead, from http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/100567

Yeah, I'm just sick that so many noobs accuse me of stealing in public party play, just because I'm playing the game it's meant to be. And just because an item has been allocated to you, doesn't mean you own it already, got it? Yet, if they are too slow to grab the item up, and someone else was faster, he/she is called thief, ninja looter, whatever.

The issue is, that the current loot system - with the timers - yields the very false impression, the loot belongs to them. And that's why the loot system has to change. Here is my suggestion:

Remove the loot timers entirely and drop the item at the feet of the player it has been allocated to. That is, instead of dropping loot at the location of the monsters, drop it at the players feet. This way no ranged character is in disadvantage. Every player will find some loot, yet the cut-throat feeling and FFA is preserved. And more importantly, every moron out there will realize, that they don't own any item until it's in their inventory. And hopefully the chat will be free from those silly accusations as well.

Thank you and have a nice day.

i dont see any problems adding in party options Looting:
-By leader
-FFA
-Round Robin
-Roll the dice

Most people talked trash D3 bla bla but... MP+X Pragon + Randoms ppl it was soo fun or like duo-trio with good geared friend's much faster that solo and way much FUN :)

Cause it was epic

Well did you actually see that EVEN with the timer everyone rushed to pick up gear and eventually died? Death or not is irrelevant, thing is, everyone STOPPED attacking a fucking BOSS, just so they can grab their gear, even though it had timers on them. Now, when this applies to a boss that it took 10 minutes to drop, it's ok, it happens once every 10 minutes. But when you are doing a docks / catacombs run it happens every 30 fucking seconds. It's fucking AWFUL

So, I just "beat the game" finishing Act III merciless. I soloed the entire journey. My only group experience was with an IRL friend on an alt. Having finished, I just tried my first map, and under the advice of another player, I joined a 6 person group. Here's my biggest problem with the whole loot system. It's one thing for it to be cut-throat, but it's another thing for it to be massively inequitable.

As a ranged squishy type character that relies on summons + a totem + running away, I'm at a huge disadvantage compared to a beefier character. Let's say we're fighting a big group of mobs and the beefy character is in there swinging away and I'm standing out of melee range nuking everything down and then a really good item drops and it's assigned to me. What do I now?

I either have to charge in while there are still lots of mobs around which is both

A) Bad for me because I'll get 2 or 3 shot by most of the mobs because my build is about doing high damage and avoiding being hit as opposed to tanking.

And

B) Bad for the group because by forcing me to play in a, frankly stupid manner, I'm being less effective. By forcing me, a semi-glass cannon witch to charge into a group of mobs I'm going to be doing a lot less damage and also putting myself at risk of death, both of these being clearly deleterious to the group.

Why not just have the loot timer begin once the last mob in the pack it is associated it with dies? This still makes it cut-throat without it being massively inequitable to certain builds.

Oh, what can I say with my 149 hp witch

No no, you aren't called a griefer / ninja cause you picked an item before someone else. You are called a ninja / griefer cause since you are camping items left and right, the dps you actually deal to the mobs (who are the ones that drop the loot YOU are picking) is dispropotionate to your fair share of loot. So, if you are the one dealing 70% of the dps in a 2man party, you are only picking 30% of the items, and vice versa. That's simply called GRIEFING, ninjaing, leeching, call it as you wish, and that's what the game promotes. But thing is, if everyone would have the same mentality as you do, there would be no pulic parties cause they would be highly inneficient in comparison to solo play.

In Chris’s recent post http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/87905 he states “We have been internally discussing community feedback on topics such as looting options and damage displays.”

So hopefully they have seen the flaws in the system and are working to resolve them.

biggest mistake was to put names on the loot and create an illusion as if the loot actually belongs to some person.

people need to understand that loot drops for the whole group. other than in D2 the devs wanted to give ranged classes a chance to grab some loot too, so they tried to compensate and let the loot be allocated randomly amongst all party members.

It is NOT "your" loot! your just get a CHANCE to grab it first!

with this system every1 should get nearly the same amount(!) of drops. you just need to be aware and grab it.

this is the only drawback when u play in a group.
in return you get so many advantages:
- killing mobs in a much faster pace
- getting more loot
- getting better loot
- level much faster in a more entertaining way

and you guys really want to be the only last thing that can be considered a con be removed? are you serious? what about people who like playing alone, there wouldn't be even 1 single pro in doing so. are you really that egoistic? just because you couldn't grab 1 or 2 items/orbs fast enough? you most likely got double the amount of it in the same time other than playing alone.

IF you would get your instanced loot with no drawbacks i can see people comming back here and complain even more about loot needs to be even more and even better.

That said, even i thing the loot system needs some fixing.

remove the name and the timers shown on items but keep the allocation as it is. furthermore dont show the allocated items to others as long as the timer runs. so no1 could camp an item, as he/she doesnt even know about it. when the timer runs out, it appears to everyone and is free to loot. so there is even a bit more time for the "chosen one" to grab it.

this way no1 (at least new players) could think by mistake it is HIS/HER item (no name, no timer; it just gets grabbed by some1 else after some time).

I agree that co-op does not have any drawbacks aside from the frustrating loot system. What I want them to do is increase the challenge of multiplayer when they increase the loot timer.

I wholeheartedly agree that something must be done about FFA loot. It's fine in groups that you trust, otherwise it's awful ninjalootfest. Also maps should have a loot timer.

Right now it's nigh impossible to grab your own loot as ranged, with the amount of lag and chaos in 6 player groups.
