How come people don't hate Steam?
I don't get it. Steam is by far the worst thing that's happened to PC gaming in many years, and yet most people don't seem to either notice or care. But why? You think you have a choice if you want to use Steam? Forget it. If the game is listed on Steam, you need Steam. You don't have a choice. And with Steam controlling more and more of the PC gaming marked, you'll have a hard time finding someone who's active as a gamer and haven't run into Steam yet. But allow me to make two examples of what I mean.
First, let's take Fallout: New Vegas as an example. Or Magicka. Or countless others. You can buy F:NV on Steam, download it, activate it and play it. No sweat. Now try to download it on Direct2Drive instead? You can download it, install it... oh, wait, you can't. You need to install and update Steam first? WTF? To make it short: Get it on Steam, and you don't need to know D2D even exist. Get it on D2D, and you need to install Steam? And people are ok with this crap? Second, you can't play games if the Steam-server is down/unavaliable/having a bad day, and that happens disturbingly frequent. Even if you have a physcial copy of the game, you still can't play it. And again, people are ok with this? Third, consider things like Direct2Drive, GamersGate, GOG.com, Impulse... you can buy a lot of games there too, just like on Steam. Deleted he game later? No sweat, just download it again. They all have a lot of the same features as Steam. The one thing they don'e have? If you download a game on either of these stores, you don't have to use the others at all. And yet... you have to use Steam. And again, people are ok with this? What is wrong with people? How can so many people be so blind? "And that's how you die properly, sailor boy."

"Second, you can't play games if the Steam-server is down/unavaliable/having a bad day...."
absolutely 100% incorrect I can play torchlight even if I pull the plug on my internet connection I can save characters on the Steam server so I can tranfer them from one pc to another I can download and update games easily and all from the same place I have 100s of demos and free games all available from the same place Steam keeps track of what I download and makes recommendations based on my other purchases Steam has groups and chat Steam has MASSIVE sales Steam is awesome |

Steam is always online DRM and people eat it up.
Diablo 3 does and people bitch like crazy. I think people like to be contrarian honestly. D3 does it for a legitimate reason, Steam does it because of badly designed structure (from a player's perspective, for valve it is awesome since they get money for inconveniencing customers). |

" What is the legitimate reason for D3 to be online only? Certainly has done nothing to prevent us from cheating like crazy... |

" It does. The inability for you to see the server's code greatly inhibits your ability to find weaknesses that allow you to dupe items or other gamebreaking bugs. I think I've only heard of successful duping on the Korean D3 servers and really nothing has been confirmed as actual duping. They've done a pretty good job about it. |

I love steam. I will disagree it is one of the BEST things to happen to PC gaming.
Clearly OP does not know what he/she is talking about. Last edited by platelamp#4436 on Jul 11, 2012, 2:43:10 PM

" LOL. There has already been several dupe exploits, although they only really made infinite materials. Have had bots running since day 3. Packet dumps to create gold. AH exploits to purchase items at the bid price. Did I mention non-stop botting since launch? There has been plenty of game breaking hacks and exploits already, sorry if you didn't know/abuse them. Oh yeah it did wonders for the game. The worst thing it did was caused the designers to balance the game around the AH rather than around SP. This just made it a shitty game all around. Steam doesn't have Always-On DRM. It has a offline mode. I have had few server problems. Steam might not be the best thing ever but certainly not bad. Steam has ridiculous sales where you get games for like 75% off. D2D doesn't offer any other services other than selling the game. If game developers want to include Steam services (cloud saving, MP servers etc) then good for them. Im not saying anything about other services but Steam really is one of the best thing to happen to PC gaming, esp Indie gaming.
The reason people don't like D3's always-on DRM is cause you can't play without internet, unlike steam, where you can choose offline mode (yes you can only go offline when your are connected to the server but the servers are almost always up.) |
