Vaal Oversoul - silly fight on softcore
So just took down Vaal Oversoul merciless.
Just leveled up and when I died the first time due a rock hitting at a bad time I thought "I can't lose any XP anyway, so there is no challenge in this fight". Then it was a silly fight, dying 5-6 times because it didn't matter anyway except for a few portal scrolls. Suggestion: use the same system as for the bandits. Once you die, you're out. If you portal out, you return outside the room and can't participate anymore until either the rest of the party dies or Vaal (and in both cases you don't complete the quest). It is certainly possible to do it without dying as people do it on hardcore. Even if it is softcore, that at least brings back the challenge in the fight. Thoughts? There's just one problem I'm having with this. YOU chose to cheese out a fight, and then decided it's no challenge cause you cheesed out? It's also possible to make him spawn in at least one or 2 places where he can't hit you and keep spamming his attacks into walls and such.
I don't care tbh, been a long time since he killed me. I just find it annoying when people use cheap tactics and then complain how they're cheated of their satisfaction for victory. I would assume eventually all fights will have portals disabled, it really doesn't matter in the long run. |

" Challenge? to VAAL? The person with the biggest windups and most obvious 'dodge now' in the game? See Merv... now merv you can do this zerging, and yes it decreases her difficulty. But literally ALL the damage vaal can do is avoidable. Indeed if this game ever goes to the stupid triple A achievements for everything, there would be one for 'take no damage while killing vaal', which would be really easy |

There is already a solution to this problem in the game. It's called playing on Hardcore.

Playing on hardcore is obviously a challenge.
It is not the right challenge for me though, I tried to avoid dying in softcore to see if it would be possible for me but still died a lot :( I need to be able to try again in a game, but still like not to have the option to cheese as it is too tempting. " Go easy, not all of us are gosu hardcore players :) |

I agree that the current death penalty isn't the correct penalty. It doesn't stop people 'cheesing' bosses/etc, and it doesn't stop people building low-surviovability builds, but it does massively over-penalise high level characters.
What would be better (IMO) is penalising death by making it so you couldn't re-enter that instance. It's still a big penalty (especially for map users), but it's always a penalty and its a fair one. It would completely prevent any sort of cheesing by dying. It would also encourage party members to try and keep each other alive if they wanted those people in their party (or, try to get each other killed if they didn't!) Perhaps on easier difficulties you might be allowed a few deaths before it banned you from the instance (eg: 2 on normal, 1 on cruel). Face it, all of your suggestions are worse than this idea: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/657756 Last edited by dudiobugtron#4663 on May 16, 2013, 7:06:24 PM

" I'd say that sort of 'skill' in killing someone like merv or brutus without taking damage is interesting and actually challenging (never done merv, done brutus but is quite a challenge (maps at least). But vaal has 5 attacks. He fires ice (who cares), he slams (dodge it), he drops rocks (Move out of the way of where the rocks are dropping, stay close to him as they drop more often futher away), he lasers (run in circles, if youh ave enough aspd/cspd you can attack in between the lasers), and he creates ads (Kill the ads before he reappears) Not hard to predict or deal with |

Why don't you just try not cheesing him? Typically the only time Vaal is going to get you is on a desync slam.
I typically make a habit when playing softcore instead of hardcore, to not portal out of boss fights, even if I run out of flasks. I like to do it in one go. "Danger is like jello, there's always room for more."

" Partying would suck, sorry. I'd much rather just have "exp debt" that any other multiplayer RPG has if there's a death penalty, where you just level slower until you've 'paid off' a set amount of exp. Means that zerg rushing while at 0 xp is no longer possible but on the other hand it'd give GGG a chance to lower the death penalty to make it fair for the new mechanic. It'd also just be less annoying to see your xp bar behind where you started just a few minutes ago.
