Why are so many OG devs leaving?

I'm going to be honest.

There is a good chance they are just want to do new things for themselves.

When PoE1 came out, most of them were not even parents at that time. Now they likely have kids and things and want to be their baseball games. Who knows?!?!

But This is just not uncommon enough in this industry to be worth speculating on tbh.

Are ggg devs working 80+ hour weeks or something?
I can’t speak to the claim that “so many devs are leaving,” but Rory Rackham’s departure is absolutely noteworthy — and also very concerning.

There’s a reason Nintendo consistently produces generational games like BOTW and TOTK: their developer turnover rate is under 4%. They protect continuity. They protect vision.

Turnover is the fastest way to derail a project. When the people who understand the why behind the design leave, the boat starts sinking fast.
They are off to make Path of 33, or Expedition of Exile. The title is not decided yet.
I just hope that its not any of the devs that have been working on poe1 the last few years.
No - luckily their intern program is still going strong and they’re all geared up for June release.

I feel like this is no longer the GGG we used to love and all the original creators of the game leaving is a big warning sign.

They are leaving for greener pastures in the dairy industry. Butter is the new gold in NZ. Being a dev is out and being a farmer is in.

according to wiki:

In 2018, Tencent became a majority holder in GGG, acquiring 86.67% of the company's shares. Three of the co-founders hold the remaining 13.3%. Two of the co-founders also sit on the board of directors, alongside 3 appointed by Tencent in April 2018.[8] In March 2024, the remaining three co-founders sold their remaining shares to Tencent, which made the company the sole owner.

The wiki is wrong.

Here are the official dates and quantities of shares owned by Tencent:
21.05.2018, 2666666/3333333 ~ 80.0%
15.04.2020, 2888887/3333333 ~ 86.7%
19.12.2022, 3111111/3333333 ~ 93.3%
25.03.2024, 3333333/3333333 = 100.0%

Just because they own all of the shares doesn't mean that there isn't contractual agreements requiring voices of GGG to be heard. In addition, it also doesn't mean that people aren't getting royalties which probably extremely likely.

I guarantee you there is nothing dirty going on. Maybe drama but nothing dirty. Business is business.

I've never directly supported game devs but I have supported devs in general. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people sleep in their cubicle. It really is that kind of world sometimes and it wears on you.

Good thing they're not doing blue collar work, they would be fired. Although its a lot harder to stay awake when you're tired and sitting/staring at a computer.

I do both sides as a Senior network/cyber guy but I've met my share of devs on the mats in bjj tourneys. I'd not underestimate them all. But I get your point.
