I had to stop watching today's interview

Usually you do a second part to improve the weaknesses of part 1.

PoE2 fails any metric of improvement besides Visuals and WASD controls.

Literally everything else feels worse

According to whom? The small vocal minority of players clinging to the exact feel of PoE1, upset that PoE2 isn’t just a shinier expansion pack or another massive power creep extension for PoE1?

Because from what we've seen, a lot of players are actually enjoying PoE2 for what it is, a more refined, grounded evolution of the game. Number do back that up.

Performance is already miles ahead, with smoother gameplay, better responsiveness, and a modern engine that doesn’t melt your rig upon running endgame.

Add that to improved visuals, clean animations, better encounter design, and a pacing shift that actually makes moment-to-moment combat feel impactful, and it’s clear PoE2 is solving problems PoE1 never really could.
Do keep in mind, the game is still in a very early access state with a lot more to come.

Just because it doesn’t hand out power at the same breakneck speed doesn’t mean it’s worse, it just means it’s not designed around the same loot explosion dopamine hits.

PoE1 still exists for that, and PoE2 is offering something different, not a replacement, and that’s perfectly fine as not every sequel needs to be a carbon copy with more sparkles.

Yep, can clearly see the better encounter design and meaningful combat.

That's why 50% of the playerbase (50k btw) play lightning spear which is a 1 button build and explodes the whole screen. They went all in with the encounter design and meaningful combat.

Let's face it, you can't make a game with meaningful combat when the loot is RNG based and when a game throws hordes of enemies at you.

Breach, Deli, Beyond, Ritual have been the completely wrong approach on top of it. Would have been better if they went with Metamorphosis, Betrayal or Beasts.

Compared to the alternatives/competition, I think PoE1 offers "something different". PoE2 offers what most ARPG's offers. Which is fine, but lets not make it out to be the best invention since the wheel.

We see everyone and their grandmother strive for the simplest builds in PoE2. The faster they are, the less buttons they need, the more people are playing them and more people are having fun.

Sure, some people want to go around parrying and using 3-button combos far into mapping, but do we really think those people will be here after... Lets say the third wipe? Personally, I think everyone that judges the "meaningful combat" based on the combat during campaign are players that won't be here in two or three wipes. But, I remember one time in 1998 I was wrong, so it might happen again.

Gutting Gameplay Gradually
some of the poe 2 supporters are so fucking annoying, it reminds me of league of legends when you re considering ruining the game but you remember it s only one of your teammate.

so i ll just say this.

you wanted one portal to stay, it s gone
you wanted no ascendancy respec, it s gone
you wanted meaningful combat, you got herald of ice then lightning spears.
you wanted the grind, they re starting to cut maps.

that s a slippery slope if you ask me :D

This is like a new CEO moving in to a company, firing people, then hiring 6 of his mates, and then claiming they were just the best people for the job. It actually doesn't matter if that is true or not, because there is no world where anyone believes it from the outside; it appears as nepotism regardless of if they are world class.

So sure; you might be right. It might be sarcasm or "playful commentary". Or it might not. You don't know anymore than the OP does. But for anyone already angry at GGG for their perceived desertion of the game, playful commentary is the last thing they want to hear.

jonathan isnt like a new CEO moving in tho. PoE1 was born when jonathan decided he wanted to make a computer game and his mate chris convinced him to make an arpg. thats how the game was born, jonathan started making it and he coded the game himself from scratch. its his game more than its anyones game.

the reason we have always seen chris in interviews and not jonathan is because chris had time to do interviews while jonathan was too busy making poe1. chris ran the business, jonathan made the game.

i feel like people in this thread dont seem to have watched many interviews with good artists, musicians etc.

if you watch interviews with corporate hack devs like the people at blizzard who make patronising games which pander to a perceived market then yes you get a lot of people saying 'the right thing'.

if you watch interviews with genuine people who are making art they care about they will often mock their own art. i was watching an interview with the front man of a band called opeth the other day, who in their field are considered the best at what they do by that niche audience, he was talking about their most successful album and he said he didnt play most of those songs live because they were bad. he was just openly mocking them, saying they were rushed, badly writen etc.

this is how genuine artists are. if you go watch an interview with some hack pos pop star whos record label has wheeled them out for an interview they will waffle on about how great their new album is, which they probably didnt write.

go talk to the people who actually wrote it they probably think its shit because thats what artists are often like, they see all the flaws.

thats why their art is good, thats why poe1 is so good, not because it was built by lame trend farmers trying to sell turds to morons, because it was built by people who keep thinking no, that could be better, should be better and they keep working and working. you dont reach greatness if you sit down and pat yourself on the back when youve done something half decent.

anyone who thinks poe1 is without flaws needs their head examined. we have sat in this forum complaining about how shit so many parts of poe1 are for 12 years and now you lot are upset because jonathan said he thought a part of poe1 was shit?

really?

I love all you people on the forums, we can disagree but still be friends and respect each other :)

No one does, though.

But a lot of people think it's good and popular enough to deserve the attention GGG said it would get. It's that simple. And everything being said and done by GGG that makes it seem like they are moving away from that 'promise' is just fuel on the fire, that is already burning hot.

At ExileCon 2019, Chris talked about reaching "145 developers", who knows how many they are today, 6 years later. Would it delay PoE2 that much to have 10% of those work on PoE1? You know, the game they said they would keep supporting, and that wouldn't be affected by PoE2?

PoE2, nor its fans created this situation. PoE1, nor its fans created this situation. GGG created it, and it could've easily been avoided.

Funny how a split second of someone adjusting their glasses turns into a whole ‘design philosophy’ take.
Pessimistic takes never get old, with some folks loving to overthink the smallest things >.<

Big doubt that many have actually even watched the interview to understand the reason for the screenshot, or sarcasm, honestly

Funny how you defend Jonathan for taking lighthearted, sarcastic jabs at PoE1, but others aren't allowed to? I don't think anyone actually think he flipped anyone off, but it is a funny picture, especially during these times of polarization.
