Calling your characters 'Toons'

Wherever toon comes from it's irrelevant. What toon stands for nowdays is what matters, so I say no to toons in PoE.
Be ready. You're not paranoid, you're PREPARED.

I quit this game every few months and so should you to continue playing it in the future.

The device is believed to have been dropped
Then you don't have to call your characters 'toons.' I'm half-tempted to start referring to members of my coterie as 'toons' just to see if the OP wants me permabanned as well.

...I'm not that petty, though. :)
If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period.
Does anyone else think of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" while reading this thread?
I have wandered through insanity;
I have walked the spiral out.
Heard its twisted dreamed inanity
In a whisper, in a shout.
In the babbling cacophony
The refrains are all the same:
"[permutations of humanity]
are unworthy of the name!"
Good grief yes. I actually wiki'd 'toon' and came across an old 80s RPG that funny dude Steve Jackson created called 'Toon'...so technically, the association between 'toon' and rpgs could go back at least that far...

Huh, I know 'toon' as a synonym for 'character' from EQ1.

I sometimes use it, simply because
a)I tend to mistype 'character' a lot. You see, in my native language, it's "Charakter" with a K. Damn that muscle memory.
b)It's shorter.
c)It's a synonym. So if I'll be going to refer to 'player character' a lot in a text, I can vary a bit.

Now, I'm not a native English speaker, and I can't think of why using toon would aggravate anyone (I mean, granted, it's one letter away from tool, but so is pool). Has it some secondary, derogatory meaning like twink?

By the by, that's how Germans refer to their alternate character: 'Twink'. If you call it an 'Alt', they mostly just chuckle and point their fingers at you.
12/12/12 - the day Germany decided boys are not quite human.

Ok OP that is some broad sweeping comments you making.

What wrong with saying toons, its easier then typing longer words plus everyone knows what it means.

I never played Wow but heard people using the term and i guess it caught on.

I think there is this misguided elitist attitude from some gamers in regards to others its ridiculous.

Because we're playing as characters we create, not as cartoons. I am not playing as Roger Rabbit, I am playing as Tagek the Shadow, it's a CHARACTER I created.

'Toon' goes as far back in my experience as Everquest 1.

Absolutely; and while the term may predate EQ, I can verify it was in use at least this early, when I played it.

"Toon" doesn't bother me, I use it when I talk to old EQ players, and I use "char" or "characters" when talking with everyone else.
Agreed, sure the word might make sense for these games. But it is just way too annoying to hear. Why cant we just call them characters? It sounds better.
