I played a ranger to 85 on Hardocre before it died, then re leveled another to 82 when it died as well. Then I made the switch to Duelist after the changes. I have quite a bit of experience.
The rangers early game attack speed and DPS is beyond horrible. Theres no comparison between the 2 in leveling speeds. Everytime i played ranger I wanted to pull my hair out until the switch to LA, which even then was mind numbing. Duelist has much more IAS and has access to beserking fairly early. It also has more projectile damage which scaled on split arrow.
Dont confuse the OP with bad information :)
PS what I said had nothing to do with when you use LA. Doesnt matter what class you play its standard information that you cannot support mana costs of supported LA until mid game.
Out of the first 20 points, you can get 50% more evasion rating, same amount of HP and phys dmg, for the price of about 10%-15% attack speed as a ranger vs duelist. I believe starting with more evasion rating is a lot better then some attack speed especially considering that you have a limited mana pool, and attack speed is pretty much irrelevant at lower levels.
I guess i am thinking in hardcore mindset. But if you are playing scrubcore, does it even really matter?

Lol you guys always play the "scrubcore" card. My duelist originated on Hardcore up until death at level 84.
I am done arguing. Enjoy your ranger :)

That is just plain stupid. You make it seem like you HAVE to take the atk speed node. Either way if u die within the first 20 points, you're just plain bad.

Uh. Its either atkspd or phys DMG or 1h nodes. Which starting route would you take out of the three, if you're going ranged level 1? Yeah. I'm so bad.

Yeah what im saying is you only need to grab that node then go projectile damage, then u can rush to health, either way u shoudnt be dying at all so damage > health at the start

If health isn't important at the start, then marauders must be a garbage class eh?

hardcore players outlevel all areas and skip dangerous mobs, so does it even matter?
/sarcasm
Stop with the HC/SC bullshit. HC play a lame and safe game of path of life nodes, if such things don't matter in SC than try levelling a not well designed build past lvl 75 without dying around every corner.

This isn't about "Pro" hardcore players. The original discussion was, which is better starting. And I gave my opinion, that ranger is for new players, or people who want to use a bow starting out instead of melee. Duelist is better in the longer run, slightly, while doing better starting as melee.

Yes, HP is indeed irrelevant at lower levels once you have leveled a few characters. By then you should have enough health on twink items to barely need any HP nodes before ~lvl20. Depending on what you want to play you can even go far into Act 3 without a lot of +HP passives (if any)
p.s. Duelist > Ranger in almost any way sadly. Bottom right side of the tree is severly lacking atm. Which is sad, since rangers are my favourite char model.
