99% of the time, your support gems are almost entirely predetermined when you pick your build. I didn't think it was possible to make them more set than in PoE1 but somehow they managed it.

To be clear; you CAN pick different support gems; they are just bad most of the time. I can count the number of legitimate "choices" on a single hand of fingers. For example, sometimes it's better to use inspiration and keep skill level high vs using a damage support and dropping skill level to sustain mana - one of the very, very few actual choices (that also existed in PoE1, btw).

In PoE1 most often the choices were just different forms of "do more damage", but now they are "do more damage with a caveat that is overwhelmingly bad to fulfill, meaning you will never use this gem".
