Physical Monk/Hand of Chuyula Feels Half Baked And Underpowered

"

The darkness mechanic also seems entirely unappetizing - assuming it can't be reserved like Spirit for gems. 100 extra health pool shield feels like it could be nice early on. MAYBE it could be useful if it was something that came after energy shield, so for a CI build its an emergency health pool.

Darkness is not a health pool shield.
It is a damage source, and you want to keep it full at all times.
My Darkness Monk will be taking both Mind Over Matter and Eldritch Battery.
Thus allowing me to take damage from mana, protecting my Darkness.

I'm using hand of chayula but I think it's bugged it's not applying more than one curse.

It's a very underwhelming skill I'm just using it to apply Snipers Mark and poison then hexblast with contagion. The flames have sustained me through many boss fights

No bug. Enemies can only have one curse at a time.
It is an inherent function of curses.
There is a node on the tree that allows extra curses, and there's probably a unique for it.
I have a feeling the third Monk Ascendancy will be themed around Monk's physical Wind skills. It's the third archetype that isn't yet by the Monk ascendancies (Invoker = Cold/Lightning, Acolyte = Chaos), and it's the least-developed build part of the Quarterstaff skills by far. I've been playing a pure physical Monk in T13-15 maps for testing/feedback and boy is it a struggle without a good weapon. Maybe the third Monk Ascendancy will offer buffs and synergies to Stun, Daze, and Knockback? Some built-in Wind Dancer or Tailwind? Armor penetration? Unarmed skills (we have yet to see the datamined Claw weapons, and there's an Unarmed cluster that specifically lists "attacking while Unarmed")? We'll just have to wait and see.

The most 'effective' way to play a Wind monk now is probably to link Devastate and Armor Break to Wind Blast and just one-button spam crowds with your oversized fan for mapping. Then for single-target, you swap to the Whirling Assault > Bell combo after breaking armor. You can also link Devastate to Staggering Palm for single-target armor break, but actually scoring the SP hit on bosses and rares in big crowds is a huge pain because trash mobs bodyblock your palm dash. That, and it's easy to accidentally stun enemies ahead of time while you're building up their Daze with Wind Blast. Plus, Impact Shockwave currently doesn't work on Staggering Palm's initial impact. Armour Explosion does work, though!

I'm running into the same. Phys quarterstaff skills feel half baked and very buggy.

You can have one mark and one curse active at a time in PoE2. Two curses if you Whispers of Doom.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around why I need a quarterstaff to do unarmed attacks. Lol

Well done GGG.

100% I'd love to go all in unarmed. We need hand wraps in the game as craftable weapons (no drop items)

fwiw I was today years old when I learned that darkness is an Honor shield lol.
you can get hit while doing your 1 honor run, absorb it into darkness, and it won't knock you out of Sanctum.

Have you messed around with Wind Blast? I'm having a blast leveling a phys monk and I'm looking to do a phys/hand of chayula build and see what I can get working.

you don't? you need a quarterstaff OR unarmed

key thing, unarmed does not mean, "don't use weapon" it means don't have a weapon. one of your weapon slots needs to be either a quarterstaff or empty

one staff

two staves

one bow

two bows

notice that the only time fist of chayula (purple skill, on my F key) isn't available is the two bow setup.

honestly, it'd be better for both those skills and monk in general if they did require a staff, least then they'd get weapon bonuses and be useful for damage instead of pure utility

There is a keystone that gives +25% skill speed if you have an empty offhand and a one handed melee weapon. I think the intent with that one is that you can use any type of one handed martial weapon + unarmed skills in one weapon set. while leaving the other weapon set open to a different setup.
