Any advice on how to beat Geonor?
So, I'm pretty much stuck at this point in the game; I got to Geonor and have no idea how to progress other than to spend the next several hours beating my head against him on my Monk.
I can get to his final phase without too many problems, but in his final form, not only can I barely do any damage to him, but most of his attacks require me to run around and can only really hit him with Glacial Cascade, which isn't enough. My Quarterstaff Strike can do 90 DPS; I'm not sure if that is a lot or not. I saw some videos were players were using Tempest Bell and doing insane damage with it, but mine seems to do jack all. What's the catch to Geonor's Putrid Wolf form to do damage so that it doesn't take 15+ minutes of wailing on him? Last bumped on Dec 14, 2024, 7:46:21 PM

I was using Tempest Bell and Tempest Strike against him. If your damage is very small, you might want to go for some different passive skills and support gems. Try to do things that boost your damage, because mine was completely fine and I'm not following any build.
Outside of that, it's a hectic boss, so you kind of just have to learn his moves so you can consistently dodge them. |

" Learning his moves isn't the problem. The problem is the Putrid Wolf form's health is rather large, and coupled with there being few opportunities as a melee to consistently attack him, I end up spending 80% of the time dodging his attacks and doing no damage. As a result, the fight lasts a really, really long time (like, 15+ minutes), and the longer the fight goes on, the higher the chance of failing the encounter as it only takes a few mistakes to get combo'd to death. If they nerfed the Putrid Wolf's health by ~50%, I think it would be fine. " Well, that was kind of my question: other than respeccing and going for more damage nodes instead of some of the defensives, or adding sockets to my gear, there doesn't seem to be much I can do. I've seen competing videos on YouTube about this. Some players succeed but it takes a really long time; others seem to be able to do way more damage than I'm doing, but it's not always clear if they are outgearing the encounter or if I've set up my Monk badly. looks like you just want to know how to oneshot him instead of actually beating him. considering you are talking about a act 1 your patience with this game is comically low. i wonder what you did on your first couple attempts, did you reset the boss midway because you got frustrated with his hp bar moving too slowly for your liking?

I haven't played a Monk yet, but I am playing the shotgun skills for crossbow and they're almost melee; you do jack squat for damage if only one pellet tags the boss across the screen. So I can't give Monk specific advice, but in general (having killed every boss currently in the campaign), I've found that bosses give you various opportunities to punish them for giving you an opening with a burst of damage.
Burst damage is the key. If your damage is that low, look at the other skills available to you and invest in your weapon. You didn't mention anything about your build so it's hard to get more specific than that. Stuns and Freezes can also allow you to pummel a boss, and they can interrupt many of their attack patterns. I just killed Geonor on Cruel and interrupting a couple of his nastier moves helped me outlive him. Ah, speaking of, most of his attacks that I've personally found tend to combo me deal Cold damage, so you can seek out resists and use the cold resist charm to help survive that kind of thing. Good luck! =^.^= |

" Where did I say that? " That's possible. I don't mind longer fights for pinnacle bosses in maps, but I certainly did not expect the Act I boss to be a 15+ minute long fight (if you succeed). " LoL wut? Why would I do that? Where are you coming up with this nonsense? More importantly, why are you coming up with this nonsense? 😅 |

If Geonor is taking 15 minutes to kill, there's either a big problem with your build or your gear. He's tough, but realistically it shouldn't take that long. What skills are you using for dps?

One big tip for getting dps in act 1 is make sure you have two rings that add phys damage to attacks equipped. That alone will push your dps significantly in the early game. You can buy them from vendors or gamble for them.

" To put it even more into persective, I wasn't really min-maxing, my gear seemed average and I was at the same level as the zone (which I believe was 15 or 16) The fight took me about 4 minutes to complete, I think. I think you have to reevaluate your stance that it's not about learning his moves though, because I absolutely did not need to spend 80% of my time dodging his moves and running around. It was a good chunk of the time, obviously, but it sounds like you have a lot of room for more uptime. I can't imagine your build is so terrible that it needs more than 3 times the amount of time to kill that mine did, because mine really wasn't that optimized. So it's probably a combination of playstyle and build. Last edited by MarsAstro#7928 on Dec 13, 2024, 4:54:32 PM

Get better gear. My friend is doing 200dps with a staff as a monk in act1. So you did something wrong either with the tree or with the skills. Also you get some supports so you probably didn't put that into skills also.
Never invite Vorana, Last To Fall at a beer party.
