Honor mechanic for the ascension trial is... kind of really hateful.

What a nice thread, love the ideas. They could also mix delve with breach like a timed maze you have to get out of ?

I mean anything that doesn't say : "We don't want melee players in the vicinity"

I don't mind the honour mechanic. Disclaimer, I was a POE1 sanctum enjoyer
That said, some of the rare monsters projectile abilities need to be toned down slightly and the honour drain amount tuned for some of those rapid multi-hitting abilities (e.g. lightning storm).

I know there definitely are people who liked Sanctum and enjoy the current honor mechanic, which is why my suggestion kinda keeps it by it still being an option, including possibly the option not having a way to gain honor in exchange for some bonus reward.

But it definitely favors a lot to some specific builds and it being the first ascendancy option, that is really bad from a game design perspective and a needless frustration to any new player.

Ascendancies as implemented today is incredibly poorly designed.
The fact that it rewards certain builds massively and punishes other just as much is horrible.
Add a huge level of luck and randomness, and you've to the worst implementation I've seen.
It's abysmal.

They need to completely overhaul this.
They can't do ascendancies in game mode which massively profits running specialized builds for them! It literally discourages build diversity.

My suggestion?
Stop these trials and award ascendency points as you progress in the campaign for now.
2 in act 2, 2 in act 3, 2 in act 4 and the last 2 in act 5 or 6.

Until they solve things, make it easily accessible for everyone -after all they want to test as many builds in EA as possible. If so, stop bottlenecking it.

A good workaround while it isn't fixed is simply to add a "multiply by 0" to the formula of loss of honor by damage until they make some changes.
Basically, it wouldn't change the UI or anything, just you'd take damage and not lose honor.

I really believe the system I proposed would be a good alternative, as for those who liked Sanctum it is still among the options, but it is a lot more flexible and lore-alligned that you are being tested on your honor under the guidance of a Djin that actually takes your concept of honor into consideration of your test.

Thank you very much.
It is genuinely good hearing someone say that and makes having typed the idea out 100% worth it ^^

You mean that maze like one of the rooms or as an alternative 4th ascendancy option?

I'd love to see more rooms in the test.
While I hated the honor system as it is, I loved the other aspects of the trial, so I'd love to see more rooms as well.

As long as they fix the situation with the honor, I'm sure I'll do the trials a looooot more.
Lol, disagree entirely.

There maybe could be a few adjustments, but it's great so far.

I found it very easy actually.

Good for you ^^
You'd still be able to go through it almost exactly as it is with the changes I suggested, but most people I've talked to agree that it is very anti-melee as it currently is, specially anti-tank builds, and as the first ascendancy option available in the game, that is definitely not good, as not going through it would mean you need to finish act 2 without your ascendancy.

So you would lose nothing if you like it as it is, but players who hated Sanctum and new players to the game would have at least options that are fair and fit the scenario and lore perfectly to what that ascendancy trial represents:
You being tested on your honor.

I played poe1 off and on for years but wasn't acquainted with honor in trials. Took me a while to understand in poe2 why my melee monk was dying.

I don't understand why honor, as it currently plays, is frankly in the game as it negates many builds from being viable.

This is so at odds with the motto of the company and the creativity and empowerment you give the players.

Nothing is worse than dying to negligible dmg with full potions.
If going full salty, I rather call Trial of Coward. Mechanic reward you for being coward and better take less risk to complete it than brave to take challenge as it 'not even worthy' damn the irony...

With ascendancy on top, it feel like player need some kind of honor rework.

Add fountain to regain honor each room, but cost more puny water?
Stun or armor break enemy will gain some honor as melee build around this?
Blocking attack don't decrease honor?
Delay enemy attack the moment they spawn?
Reduce honor only on telegraphy attack? not from everything and those RNG fissure/ mod affix aoe?

Sorry, I always hate how co-- Sanctum mechanic work and integrate to ascendancy is like punch to the wound. You don't like it? we force you to do it now. (Ultimatum is even more rippy one shot...)
Slow in, slow out cuz I'm just a player.

Yea, Sanctum kinda just sucks for melee or tanky builds in general. It's not a super great mechanic in an ARPG
I didn't have much of an issue with this as a Mercenary at the very least.
Reduces everyone to the same build : simply dont get hit lol lmao hammer that spacebar

Gotta watch for tiny crabs sneaking up on you and doin a 1 HP / 2000 honor damage poot while the whole screen explodes with other shit like usual

A single snakeman deleted 300 honor and no restoring fountains in sight? Welp better restart ya aint making it thru the boss, cut your losses

I beat it but id describe the experience as aggressively cancer. Thinking about having to redo it for future leagues makes me wanna barf. Whoever in GGG cant let go of Sanctum please cease this molestation

The rooms and challenges and such arent actually that bad but the honor system turns it into garbage, just my humble opinion.

While a bit aggressive in some wording, I can fully agree with the sentiment.

The rooms itself and the room system are more than okay.
The only issue is on the honor system in my view, since it heavily favors too much certain builds when that is the first ascension method, which unfairly punishes anyone that doesn't make that intended build.

Giving options on what makes you gain and lose honor would at least make it fair and lot more fun and interesting, but for those that like Sanctum can still play it Sanctum style by just picking the Sanctum options.
