Quick heads up: Melee is completely terrible.

I can’t even comprehend someone can be such an elitist. Want a medal or something for ‘figuring out’ the game that’s still in early access? No? Then piss off and let people share their feedback.

The point I'm making there's precisely NOTHING to "figure out" here.
You pick big hammer, you pick stun nodes and "more damage in stun" nodes, you pick titan.
With just a little effort you will 2-hit/4-hit bosses into a stun, and you're dealing so much damage that they most likely will be long dead before 2nd stun is over.

It's not hard, nor it needs any "figuring out".

Hey Sand,

Have you tried to basic Mace Attack? The default skill? You can do a lot with that skill. It seems like it's useless because the auto attacks always are - but this one isn't. You can use this with aoe supports and stun entire packs in a couple of swings. Sometimes one, depending on your weapon.

Stun and boneshatter is a great combo.

Stampede is also awesome for stunning.

I'm in maps now and currently I am Stampede -> Boneshatter

Against hard mobs and uniques I am added Hammer of the Gods and Perfect Strike in rotation.

I’m well aware boneshatter is pretty good when clearing mobs. It’s pretty trash against bosses.

And basic attack then roll, repeat is literally the only thing that I could do against Act 2 boss when I played a melee mercenary. Everything else was taking too long to cast so I would take damage. Stun bar also took like legit 2 mins to fill up. 1000 dps felt more like 100 too.

Meanwhile, on monk I could just drop the boss with a couple of bell durations.

Yeah, I don't use boneshatter on bosses. Bosses is Basic Mace, Perfect Strike, Hammer of the Gods for me. I use Seismic Cry and Infernal Cry to buff my HOTG and Perfect Strike and I melt bosses.

Stun bar taking that long seems odd. I think you need to add some stun amplification stuff to your passive tree/items/supports.

I am really enjoying melee, but it definitely has some issues. The honor system being one major one. Constant standing in pools of ground goo that you can't see because you're surrounded by mobs is another major downside.

But I am surviving well in maps at the moment. Stampede changed the game for clear and I am still doing well on bosses.

Like I said, I’m talking about melee mercenary specifically using mace. Even if I went the straightest route to the closest stun node it would be a 10 level setback with pretty much only travel (+5 stat) nodes picked. And at lvl 30 you can’t really afford to go that way. So the majority of stun increases come from the weapon itself, support skills and skills. But even then it was barely making a dent.

In fact, the titan boss was even recovering stun faster than I was inflicting it. It was quite ridiculous.
Yeah he's almost stun immune for everyone so...

Anyway it's 100% fine as mercenary as well.

I'm having a fine time melee.

Went rolling slam with bone shatter.

Learn to roll I guess, that was the weird part for me but I like it.

You're basically saying GGG should delete bad gems.
Or are they meant to be there as a bait for new players so they get bored, frustrated and quit? To weed them out?

Just stick to recommended gems and you'll be fine.

If you're playing a mercenary with a mace, you obviously going to have a much weaker result.

Merc ascendancies aren't even particularly pro-melee, much less pro-mace. Given the current tree, we at least need axes/swords (faster hitting weapons) to make good use of melee rage-themed merc. Maces are too slow to be great for rage.

The skill tree is not terribly different from a warrior skill tree for this case, but at you said - indeed you'll need some points just to traverse towards warrior branch.

So you're making a substantially suboptimal build with no way to even make it great (with skills/equipment/ascendancies available right now), and afterwards you're complaining "melee is bad". Not "I made a very quirky build and it turned out bad", but "melee is bad". Why?

PS: I suggest that your next build should be a Witch with Giant's Blood and two 2H maces. This will certainly allow you to complain some more about melee.

Going over to the warrior side from mercenary is really not a problem at all. The warrior ascendancies aren't even that amazing for mace specifically. The only real difference is that mercenary has kind of a bad start with no damage nodes early.

But they are? Titan is very pro-mace, and I expect it to still be the strongest pick for mace builds even way later when we get other weapons.

Currently Titan is for big stuns or big slams (both correspond to mace amazingly well), and Warbringer is for tanking, armor breaking (read: phys damage), or warcries. Warbringer will likely fit axes the most later, although armor break/tanking bits fit maces well enough too.

Mercenary ascendancies are not tied to his starting weapon. The proximity to str and dex trees also allow for a lot of diversity in build crafting. If all you care about is making one trick ponies then you do you. But that doesn’t change the fact that mace on its own is simply bad.

Even if you make stun work, the non reducible animation times and revenge mechanics come to bite you in the ass anyways.
