yea saying there's no 'meta', as in there's no 'most efficient way of playing' is just a cope. a weird one too. the problem of following the meta only exists if the most efficient way of playing is so much better than the other ways that it's just not worth 'playing your way', time wise
if some builds are way more competent at solving problems, GGG might rebalance in some way anyway. either buff the others or nerf it

i think the proper argument should be about not NEEDING to be hyper efficient.

i really hate the term META. reason being, in poe you dont need to be META but you need to be HYPER EFFICIENT.

whats the difference? META usually means using something regarded as superior or most efficient or most popular strategies employed by gamers because it is strong.

hyper efficient builds can be meta but not necessarily are meta. some people will say "oh i m playing a non meta build" or "off meta" but they're actually playing a hyper efficient build. its not a popular build or established build but its usually hyper efficient with minimal wasted passive points.

i actually dislike how POE1's end game goes to the point that uber pinnacle exist, hence you need to be hyper efficient or else you cant clear them.

the harder content that exists, the more you're forced to be efficient.

personally i prefer it if a game allows you to clear the hardest content without being efficient. the reward for being efficient is to let you clear faster/or tank easily.

but in poe1 that is not the case.

if we're being real poe2 might end up following poe1's footsteps.

the major difference of poe2 tho, is the new passive tree IS efficient to begin with.

the attribute highway is modular so you dont "waste" stats on stats you dont need.

also the way jewel sockets on tree are positioned, they're "part" of the attribute highway rather than a pitstop that you need to spend an extra point or two to allocate.

that said i m still quite hyped to see how POE2 turns out.

That's the joke you don't.
You all forgot to factor trading and the fact the game is build around it. Meta builds let you earn currency way faster. Sure, nobody forces you to use them, but if you want to gear up fast, you've got no other alternative.

You don't, players have been conditioned to believing this via "comparison is the death of happiness" but its never been true.

PoE1 is pretty diverse if you let go of the div/hr construct players seem to wrap themselves in - yes you require some mechanics to do the top content but that is by design, the design is somewhat circumvented when you bypass it with gear/build.

All it takes is accepting that if you want to dual wield bows while riding a pogo-stick you are gonna make less currency than an optimised TS deadeye speed farming - its OK to make less guys its a game play for fun ;)
The thing with the PoE meta in regards to builds and currency is that there's a seperate one for every type of content / strategy. Heist, delve, invitation bossing, ubers and more are all competitive if optimized correctly.

However, the "meta" people generally see/complain about is just the popularity contest. We saw it this league with LS and people complaining about that. The most played version is Fubgun's version which lacks defensives and struggles with map mods.

Meanwhile we have actual metas like uber Eater, Exarch, Maven being killed / phased in one server tick by ice trap for 8+ leagues in a row and it's not even being mentioned.
