The Ulitmate MELEE guide
IF your melee and wondering how you could improve your character. Well don't worry i have a awsome guide that took 2 weeks to write. So its guarenteed to help you alot! Here it goes!!1
Wooeeeeowwweeerghufsh! Survivability The hard way Search your way through the entire talent tree for life nodes and other useful defensive stats ignore the rest. Gather insanely good gear (somehow). The easy way Just don't play melee. There is really only downsides going melee. Why go close when they can be killed from a distance? Duh.... DPS The hard way. Since you have to focus so much on survivability chances are your DPS will end up lacking, especially if your going sword and board. The problem for a melee is that low dps basically mean you will take more dmg, so its very important you kill things fast. So my super clever advice is that you get insanely good gear (somehow) then your DPS should be pretty nice, maybe even great. The Easy way Just don't play melee. By not going melee you can afford to go a bit less on defensive stats and more on offensive stats. AOE The hard way. Melee has some pretty nice AOE skills. Cleave and groundslam are nice skill gems for AOE and Melee splash can work quite nice as a support gem. The easy way Just don't play melee. Ranged classes has so much more options to take out clusters without having to risk their lives. Item quality/quantity The hard way Melee is that worst class for getting this just because hes so gear dependant and need so many other stats to stay alive. But once again if you get really good gear and high level (somehow) you can afford to go for some IIQ and IIR. The easy way Just don't play melee. Play a class that is less gear dependant that is ranged or use totems/minions. Then you can afford to go for this without dying too often. Dealing with monster with alot of hard special abilities. The hard way The game has alot of nasty mobs, tones of ranged fires multiple shots which will all hit a melee user. Getting frozen, getting punctured or just really nasty crits are all things a melee class constantly has to experiance. So make sure to constantly pay attension to whats going on, use leap or flick to get in and out of dangerous sitiuations. Stay mobile and avoid projectiles. Getting a insane gear also helps here. The easy way Don't play melee. By doing this you will be alot more versitile and there will be less nasty mobs that can fuck you up. Desync The hard way Everyone is affected by desync but as a melee your constantly where the action is. This increases the odds that you will take extra dmg just because the game wants to fuck around with you. So keep in mind of this and make sure you got alot of HP. If you notice the game is acting weirder then ussual try to be a bit more careful in your playstyle. Not so easy since...well your melee and have to attack in melee -.- The easy way Don't play melee. Wasted alot of time trying to be entertaining when all you had to say was:
"Don't go melee if you expect to use the word ultimate in describing your build or character, because that makes you a liar." GGG gives me Diablo 2 Teleport? I give them 50 bucks. No questions asked.

I'm going with the easy way!

Bam. You now clear everything in the game (up to act2 merci so far) in less than a minute. (as far as I've experienced. I'm sure at some point I'll run into "issues" besides desync). |

dont quite agree. real men try to make things work. yes I agree there are downsides, but it's fun for some people. and since there are expectations for incoming melee buffs I couldn't reroll knowing that it's going to get better.

Ten-minute response:
Survivability Every defense has pros and cons (yes, including life). Learn which suit your playstyle, and go for armor pieces and passives that benefit it. Also, "melee" does not mean "stand next to your enemy at all times", it means "stand next to your enemy in order to kill them". If you have to dodge their attacks a little before killing them, that's okay. So does everyone else. Damage output Obviously, if you go for the defenses of a shield, your damage output is going to be lower than if you'd gone for a two-handed weapon - so much lower, in fact, that your damage per hit will only be on par with bows. If you'd rather not invest currency in a weapon that deals actual damage, pick up any old sword and use Viper Strike, which deals its damage regardless of the power of the weapon you use, and has the added bonus of not having to stand next to them after you start playing tag. AoE As mentioned in the last section, your main advantage here is your high base damage compared with bows, wands, and spells. Whether this balances the additional time you spend preparing your kills is a matter of personal taste. Item quality/quantity One of the advantages of your higher base damage as melee is that you don't have to use as many sockets for DPS-enhancers. Use one or two on the rarity and quantity gems for your main kill-skill(s), and laugh when the ranged players whine about not being able to find the 5-link they "need". Dealing with monsters that have difficult special abilities Surprise! You've found the part of the game that actually rewards skill. Charging in like an idiot will get anyone killed, ranged or melee (see complaints re: charging Rhoas, reflect, lightning thorns, flicker strike mobs... the list goes on). Desync This tends to be a problem for players who don't actually want to be in melee, since with shift-attacking a melee character can slaughter everything that would otherwise be blocking their way, even if it's not where the screen says it is. Remember swinging at doorways in Diablo 1 to catch the Hidden? I have wandered through insanity;
I have walked the spiral out. Heard its twisted dreamed inanity In a whisper, in a shout. In the babbling cacophony The refrains are all the same: "[permutations of humanity] are unworthy of the name!" |

" Oh god you actually responded to it seriously. Oh...god... GGG gives me Diablo 2 Teleport? I give them 50 bucks. No questions asked.

" I was tempted to do the same... Trollers need to be put in their place!!! |

Okay This thread was not ment to be very serious. But I think there is atleast some truth behind most of it, even if its exadgerated. There are definatly some strengths with melee, but far less then most other builds.
" Okay since you answerd so seriously im gonna use some counter arguments. " No but melee still involves getting close to the opponant or atleast relativly close. So there is obviously gonna be more dodging then for a ranged user. or totem user etc. Basically anyone can figure out that going in close = more damage taken. " Well true but first of when going melee you have to mainly focus on survivability and go hunting for health nodes etc. Yes its important for ranged aswell. But since melee will take more hits they need it more which in return mean they become quite dependant on their gear. I totaly agree that you can do great dmg with melee, especially with twohander. But can't say I agree a bow does same dmg as sword and shield, Bow has the quiver which boost dmg. " Yes I guess its a matter of taste. I got a elemental melee with melee splash and its definatly pretty nice. Not as large area but overall very good dmg. However overal ranged has a bit more AOE options. Not to mention its safer an easier. Bang bang multi+chain shots, or RoA, or Spork totems etc etc.. " Can't say I know that many that goes for quality/quantity as melee. Not to the same extent as many other classes. You have to have some pretty solid IIQ/IIR gear that doesn't drag your characters stats down too much. Only tried a rarity gem once for my main attack, but personally i didn't enjoy it. I lost several K dps and my survivability became lacking when stuff didn't die fast enough. I really think there are other classes which are alot easier for stacking IIQ and IIR. " True you can't just charge in like crazy. But what class has better options for playing it safe when a big threat appeares? The one who can stay ranged and kite or bring up totems/summons or the guy which main DPS comes from smacking something in close range? All builds has some mobs which they fear, but i think melee has by far the most. Since they are the least versitile and most likely to get hit because they go in close. I got a melee hyrbid Witch and my trap + firetotem can solve most issues out there. Which makes me feel so relived i never wen't pure melee. " Yes i agree it can probably be more devastating for a ranged with a major desync just because they ussually got less hitpoints/armor. But overall large desyncs happens quite rarely, most are rather small desyncs. Like stuff that updates slightly later. Stuff like that is rarely a big deal since they are usually further away from the enemy. For a melee though which constantly is surrounded close to hostiles a few secs can mean alot of extra dmg and increase the risk of death. It can be a mob you are about to evade and it doesn't update, or that your health bar doesn't update, or buggy lava elementals that rolls over you instantly without any animation. I love my melee hybrid i would never reroll something dumb like a dual totem user or a summoner just so that i can feel more safe and stack IIQ/IIR. All im saying is that the game really doesn't have many things that encourage you to play melee. Last edited by WickedSausage#2727 on Apr 24, 2013, 7:59:41 PM
