Pure One Hander and off-hand empty character / skill / passives

The character Charan Jaydemyr, for whom I made the original sword that translated into Tipua Kaikohuru when it manifested in Wraeclast, always keeps a hand free in combat. The only time he'll wield that sword with both hands is when he's sure of a killing blow.

I figure a Ranger with Tipua double-striking and puncturing could definitely resemble Charlotte from the Samurai Spirits/Showdown games. :)

That all said, I'd be a bit miffed if an entire line of items were put into the game that did the same thing as one of my unique's...unique attributes. The mechanic for disabling the off-hand was, however, already in the code when I asked for it, which I suppose was quite convenient for all parties. ;)

edit: last point corrected and clarified below. Mea culpa!

Speaking as the person who implemented this, that's not true. I had to specifically code for that.
I doubt we're going to have a whole series of swords using that mechanic - I agree that taking away from what makes uniques unique would be a bad thing.

Really?! I'm sorry then. Ah, a point of clarity:

Erik, in his initial email to me (I dug it up): "Doing the disabling of an off-hand slot was something that wasn't
discarded by the programmers, so we might be able to do that."

Sorry, Mark. You did a great job at any rate. Hope it wasn't too much of a hassle. :)

Yeah, it was something we didn't say would be impossible when asked - turned out very slightly trickier than I'd initially expected, but wasn't really much trouble to implement.

I just wanted to make it clear to others reading this wasn't something we already had in the wings for doing a series of weapons such as those proposed here so people don't get their hopes up for such.

Have you found your sword yet, by the way?

I've not found it for myself, but some kind soul PMed me offering one barely a day after it was released (I traded for it, of course) and now I'm in the process of 'trading up' towards a perfect version (300% damage, 50 evasion maybe?).

I even started over so that I could appreciate it as a low level murder-machine. It's everything I wanted and more -- I've used it from level 7 to early 30s. My original request to Erik was 'very powerful at level 7, leveling off around 15, redundant by 30 or so'. It was to be the one-handed sword version of Shiversting or Searing Touch, both of which can last well past their level. It's a massive thumbs up to you guys that you delivered exactly what I imagined.

This is why I said it would have to be something like a keystone. Just like other keystones, and support gems, that do things that uniques do. In this case it would just use the normal one handed weapons (Probably just the melee ones. No wands allowed!) This would allow the unique sword to be powerful for this build for a while and then allow the ability to switch to a different sword for later levels. Balancing may need to be done obviously.

I would also like to note that I do not care whether or not this idea ever came to be as I am more of a sword and shield guy myself. But I would like to assist those that do prefer that style of play.
They said I was mad! They said it couldn't be done! But now who's mad?!?!
^^^^^^^^

I have many brows. They just pop up on my face.

I don't get this unique stuff at all, find it as lvl 7 weapon and discard it quickly?

Who is going to buy that, since they can be level 50 in a week?

Then like, play for maybe months to get another? And all that time, act like you are Charlotte or Zorro?

But to your chance, the next unique you will find is a maul?

Meh. Whatever. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

edit; Actually, No. That sword still can be unique because you can use it as another class, or, rather, if that's what's gonna happen, build. You don't need Charlotte passives and if you get Charlotte passives, you are a better Charlotte than everyone else with that unique.

Some items in this post are currently unavailable.
Is every bow as strong as an unique bow in this game? No.

So can "1 hander that disables off-hand rare swords" will be weaker than this unique.

I can't see any problem.

I play only ranged characters and I didn't really look but is there even required pose, animation, etc for this unique to not look silly when you are fighting with it?

Do you hold it as if it's a 2 hander? Or do you hold it as if you have dual weapons? I bet one of those two and not something else.

Can you perform charging, poking, reaching, extending attacks with it?

Can you put your hand on your waist while doing so?

Or raise your off-hand in a cool fashion?

Then you are just getting fooled...

Tipua whatever, disables off-hand. Just disabling off-hand is nothing to be proud of.

Grrr.

Thank you for clarifying that.

As for the rest of your questions, I suggest you get a rapier and wield it with nothing in the off-hand.

Then you will see.

Or find my sword and try it for yourself.

Either way, Mark_GGG made it very clear that 'disabling the off-hand' was an unusual achievement and not something you'll see in other 1-handed swords in a hurry.

Also, I suggest you lower your expectations when it comes to 'making' a character in a game. Of COURSE the ranger won't have exactly the same pose as Charlotte -- she will, however, still be wielding a rapier with one hand, the other hand empty, and dealing very quick attacks, slashing and lunging, looking every bit the Duelist.

Sorry if I've misinterpreted your post, I had some trouble understanding some of it.

Perhaps some Diamond needs to develop a unique set of gloves, with different mods depending on whether or not they have an empty hand (it'd give Mark something to do, anyway):

Haunted Gauntlets of the Swordmaster Unique Leather Gloves

With off-hand empty:

+XX% to block

Reflect XX points of damage back to melee attackers

+XX Evasion

Regenerate XX Life per minute

+XX Cold damage

Off-hand used:

+XX% IAS

+XX Strength

+XX Armor

Regenerate XX Life per minute

+XX Cold damage

...Or some such.

"I will guide an empty hand

And punish the foe for each blow he lands

Fill your grip with shield and brand

My undying strength is yours to command."
